Climate change is expected to increase temperatures and extreme weather events, which increases the risks for food contamination. As food systems become interconnected, ensuring food is safe at every stage from production to consumption is essential.

To solve this, we need:

1️⃣ Data: Collecting food safety data where it is currently lacking is necessary to make informed decisions.

2️⃣ Policy: Governments need adaptable, evidence-based policies suited to local contexts.

Food safety involves developing production methods that ensure safety while reducing water, energy, and resource use.

Why does food safety matter to the economy? The cost of inaction is staggering.

According to the World Bank, unsafe food costs low- and middle-income economies about:

• $ 110 billion in lost productivity and medical expenses each year.

• $95.2 billion in productivity loss.

• $15 billion in treating food-borne illnesses.

But this isn't just about money, it's about development. Strengthening food safety systems is key to achieving safe, nutritious food for all. Food safety supports market growth and consumer trust.

Investing in safety from farm to fork is an investment in economic resilience.

Why is food safety important? Because unsafe food undermines our ability to nourish the world.

Foodborne illness can decrease the body's ability to absorb nutrients, meaning that programmes focused on nutritious foods must consider safety to be effective.

The global statistics are alarming:

📉 600 million cases of foodborne diseases occur annually.

📉 420,000 deaths occur every year due to unsafe food.

📉 33 million years of healthy lives are lost globally each year.

Ensuring food safety is critical to decreasing malnutrition. We cannot achieve zero hunger without food safety.

What is food safety? It is a critical pillar of strong, resilient, and equitable food systems.

It isn't just about hygiene; food safety protects public health and supports nutrition and sustainable development. In fact, food that is unsafe to eat is a waste of the water, energy, and raw materials used to produce it.

🌱 Strengthening Responsible Business Conduct in Pakistan

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Pakistan, in collaboration with Punjab Agriculture, Food & Drug Authority (PAFDA), Pakistan Business Council, Pakistan Dairy Association and other stakeholders, successfully launched the responsible business conduct guidebook at the Punjab Agriculture, Food and Drug Authority (PAFDA), Lahore.

The event brought together representatives from government, industry, development organizations, and academia to discuss the importance of Responsible Business Conduct (RBC) in advancing a more sustainable, resilient, and responsible business in Pakistan.

The RBC guidelines are developed to support businesses in aligning with international standards while addressing local industry realities. The guidebook provides practical tools for self-assessment, gap identification, and action planning to help businesses strengthen environmental, social, and governance practices across their value chains. The guidebook is structured around four key pillars i.e human rights, labour standards, environment, anti corruption

The event also highlighted the role of innovation and sustainability initiatives under the Whey2Value Project, focused on transforming whey into a nutritious value-added product while reducing environmental waste in the dairy sector.

A dissemination workshop on “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Study of whey” was convened in Islamabad on May 5th, 2026, to explore sustainable solutions for Pakistan’s cheese processing industry. The session featured remarks by MPA and Parliamentary Secretary for Environment, Ms. Kanwal Liaqat, who emphasized the importance of environmentally responsible practices and policy support for sustainable production. The workshop showcased key findings from the Life Cycle Assessment of whey including cost-benefit analysis, highlighting innovative approaches to transform whey from a waste by-product into a nutritious, value-added resource. Through insightful presentations and discussions, participants explored practical pathways to reduce environmental impact, promote circularity, and strengthen data-driven decision-making, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient food systems in Pakistan.
