Qaiser Nawab – Comment on the 17th ECO Summit in Khankendi

“It is truly a historic moment to see the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization being held in Khankendi, in the beautiful and resilient region of Karabakh. This is not just a regional summit—it is a symbol of peace, reconstruction, and renewed regional cooperation after decades of challenges. Azerbaijan’s decision to host this summit in Karabakh shows the world how hope and development can rise from conflict, and how ECO countries stand united for a shared future.

On the political front, this summit marks a turning point. It demonstrates that ECO member states are committed to building trust and dialogue in the region—focusing on shared values, sovereignty, and stability. It also signals that regional peace is essential for unlocking economic prosperity.

Economically, the summit opens up new possibilities for trade, transit, energy, and investment. The focus on connectivity—whether through transport corridors, digital cooperation, or energy projects—reflects the region’s ambition to become a bridge between East and West, North and South. With major infrastructure already developing under Azerbaijan’s leadership, Karabakh can emerge as a new hub of regional trade and green growth.

We in Pakistan welcome this vision wholeheartedly. Our Prime Minister’s presence at the summit is a strong message of our deep ties with Azerbaijan and our commitment to regional cooperation. Pakistan is ready to work closely with ECO partners in sectors like transport, energy, food security, and youth-led innovation.

This summit, in Khankendi, is not just a diplomatic event—it is a message to the world that the ECO region is forward-looking, united, and determined to shape its own future through cooperation, peace, and prosperity.

Thank you.”

Sanjiangyuan National Park, one of the first batch established in China, is home to the sources of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers. It is the largest of its kind in the country, covering an area of 123,100 square kilometers. With an average elevation of about 4,500 meters, the Sanjiangyuan area sits on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, parts of which span southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region and northwestern Qinghai Province.Sanjiangyuan is usually seen as an arid and frigid area due to its high altitude. However, the precious water flowing from the abundant glacier resources has nurtured numerous wild flora and fauna, such as snow leopards, Tibetan blue bears and Tibetan foxes.

Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is set to establish structured collaboration frameworks aimed at promoting training programs for young scientists and researchers from Pakistan.

The institute has also expressed its commitment to providing technological support to improve health infrastructure and diagnostics.

During his visit to BGI’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, on June 16, Qaiser Nawab, Chairman of the Belt and Road Initiative for Sustainable Development (BRISD), explored opportunities for cooperation in health, biotechnology, and scientific capacity building between the two countries.

During the visit, Nawab was warmly received by Mao Zhixia, Senior Official at BGI and head of South Asia affairs. Mao provided a comprehensive overview of BGI’s evolution—from its modest beginnings to becoming the world’s largest genomics research institution.

He highlighted BGI’s groundbreaking work in gene sequencing, health diagnostics, precision medicine, and pandemic response.
