World Environment Day 2025: Beat Plastic Pollution

Every minute, a truckload of plastic enters our oceans. It's in our rivers, our air, even in our blood. The reality? Plastic pollution is no longer just an environmental issue, it’s a health, justice, and survival crisis.

🌍💧 World Water Day 2025 | March 22

Water is life, and glaciers are one of our planet’s most vital freshwater sources. This year, the theme for World Water Day 2025 is "Glacier Preservation", emphasizing the crucial role glaciers play in maintaining global freshwater supplies.

However, while we talk about water conservation, it is crucial to address the ongoing water injustice in Pakistan. The construction of new canals on the Indus River threatens the water rights of downstream regions, particularly Sindh, which heavily depends on the river for agriculture, drinking water, and ecosystems. These projects not only disrupt the natural flow of water but also worsen water scarcity for riparian communities that have historically relied on the Indus.

The right to water is a fundamental human right, and Sindh’s access to its fair share of Indus waters must be ensured. Policies that prioritize upstream diversions at the expense of downstream communities violate water equity and exacerbate environmental degradation, including the decline of wetlands, mangroves, and biodiversity in the Indus Delta.

At Green Impact Movement (GiM), we advocate for climate justice, sustainable water management, and the protection of water rights for all. It’s time to demand policies that are fair, sustainable, and inclusive for every community dependent on the Indus.

ورلڈ گلیشیئرز ڈے – برفانی پہاڑوں کا تحفظ، ہماری بقا کی ضمانت

پاکستان – برفانی ذخائر کی سرزمین:
پاکستان کو قدرت نے دنیا کے سب سے بڑے برفانی ذخائر سے نوازا ہے۔ یہاں 7,000 سے زائد گلیشیئرز موجود ہیں، جو شمالی علاقوں میں پہاڑی سلسلوں میں پھیلے ہوئے ہیں، جن میں قراقرم، ہمالیہ، اور ہندوکش کے عظیم پہاڑ شامل ہیں۔ بیافو، بالتورو، سیاچن، اور ہسپر جیسے گلیشیئرز پاکستان میں دنیا کے سب سے بڑے غیر قطبی برفانی ذخائر میں شمار ہوتے ہیں۔ یہ گلیشیئرز ملک کی دریائی نظام کی بنیاد ہیں، جو دریائے سندھ، جہلم، چناب، راوی اور ستلج کو پانی فراہم کرتے ہیں۔ یہی پانی ہماری زراعت، بجلی کی پیداوار، اور روزمرہ زندگی کے لیے نہایت ضروری ہے۔

موسمیاتی تبدیلی اور گلیشیئرز کا تیزی سے پگھلنا:
بدقسمتی سے، گلوبل وارمنگ اور ماحولیاتی تبدیلی کے باعث پاکستان کے گلیشیئرز تیزی سے پگھل رہے ہیں۔ مختلف تحقیقاتی رپورٹس کے مطابق، پاکستان کے گلیشیئرز ہر سال 0.5 میٹر سے 1 میٹر تک سکڑ رہے ہیں، جبکہ کچھ گلیشیئرز کے حجم میں پچھلے چند دہائیوں میں 35% کمی واقع ہوچکی ہے۔
(گلیشیل لیکس آئوٹبرسٹ فلڈس-GLOFs) پاکستان میں ایک نیا موسمیاتی خطرہ بن چکا ہے۔ صرف گزشتہ چند سالوں میں 60 سے زائد GLOF واقعات رپورٹ ہوچکے ہیں، جن میں کئی دیہات، سڑکیں، پل، اور کھیت تباہ ہو گئے۔ 2022 میں پاکستان میں آنے والے تباہ کن سیلاب بھی اسی ماحولیاتی بحران کی ایک بڑی مثال تھے، جہاں پہاڑی گلیشیئرز کے پگھلنے سے پانی کا بہاؤ حد سے زیادہ بڑھ گیا تھا۔

ہماری بقا براہ راست ان برفانی پہاڑوں سے جڑی ہوئی ہے۔ اگر ہم نے آج اقدامات نہ کیے تو کل ہمیں شدید پانی کے بحران، زرعی تباہی، اور ماحولیاتی آفات کا سامنا کرنا پڑے گا۔ اس ورلڈ گلیشیئرز ڈے پر عہد کریں کہ ہم ماحولیاتی تحفظ میں اپنا کردار ادا کریں گے اور اپنے قدرتی وسائل کو محفوظ رکھنے کے لیے جدوجہد کریں گے۔
