The man behind Abbottabad’s rise as Medical hub

Abdul Jamil Khan was a distinguished Pakistani civil servant and health policymaker from the Arghushal family of the Swati tribe of Ahal, Mansehra, who dedicated his life to public service, medical governance, and the development of healthcare institutions in Pakistan. Over the course of his illustrious career, he held several of the country’s most significant positions, including Federal Minister for Population Welfare, Director General Health, Government of Pakistan, President of the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council, President of the Pakistan Pharmacy Council, and Member of the Advisory Committee on Health as well as the Hospital and Health System Monitoring Committee of the Government of Pakistan. At the international level, he represented Pakistan as Vice-President of the World Health Organization’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee (EMRO). He played a pivotal role in advancing medical education as the Founding Principal of Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, and the owner and Founding Principal of Frontier Medical College, Abbottabad, and later served as Principal of Bolan Medical College, Quetta. He was also the owner of Shaheena Jamil Hospital, Abbottabad. In recognition of his outstanding and meritorious contributions to public health, medical education, and national administration, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan, securing his place among the most respected figures in Pakistan’s civil and medical history.
