Zoom class for students and adults: The first question for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) was, āHow would you survive for one week without affordable Internet access?ā Many participants answered that they would read books at home or in the library. Some suggested going to a camp for one week or even a month during the summer without internet, TV, or smartphones.
The next topic was DESIGN and INNOVATION.
Ms. Sumaiya Shamshad from Tahafuzpak mentioned that design is key in combating climate change, offering innovative and sustainable solutions. Biomimicry, like wind turbines mirroring birdsā flight for clean energy, showcases nature-inspired innovation. Rain gardens and green roofs exemplify practical design, filtering rainwater and cooling cities naturally. These innovations demonstrate how design can drive environmental solutions effectively. In fact, in Japan, green curtains, such as sponge gourd curtains, are becoming common to mitigate sunlight.
The next speaker Dr. Ari Mazzeo encouraged us to envision solutions by drawing and imagining scenarios applicable to our own community. The focus was on designing cities for mutual benefits, encompassing individuals, families, communities, and the environment, including wildlife and cyclists. Suggestions from students included increasing green spaces and parks in urban areas. Dr. Ari highlighted the significance of incorporating plants indoors or within neighborhoods to benefit local communities.
Also, A 12-year-old entrepreneur named Ayzel proposed supporting Pakistanās textile and apparel industry by hosting the International Fashion Design Week (IFTW) with the aim of fostering trade and economic growth. This initiative seeks to promote cultural exchange and commerce, providing an economic boost for the region. We were all inspired by Ayzelās commitment to working towards sustainable fashion, and by Dr. Ariās emphasis on focusing on natural materials for clothes and their processing
