ORGULLO CARAVAN BRINGS SOGIESC AWARENESS AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION ADVOCACY TO BARANGAY SINUNUC
ZAMBOANGA CITY โ The City Gender and Development (GAD) Services, Office of the City Mayor, in partnership with Mujer-LGBT Organization, successfully conducted the Orgullo Caravan in celebration of Pride Month 2026 with the theme: Orgullo na cada Voz, Igualdad na cada Espasyo, in Barangay Sinunuc, bringing together members of the LGBTQIA+ community, local leaders, and residents in a meaningful dialogue on inclusion, diversity, and equal rights.
The activity served as a platform to strengthen awareness on LGBTQIA+ issues and promote a more inclusive and gender-responsive community.
Leading the discussion was Mx. Alvin Toni Gee Fernandez, Chief Executive Officer of MUJER LGBTQ, Inc. and President of the Zamboanga LGBTQIA+ Federation, who delivered an in-depth presentation on S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and S*x Characteristics (SOGIESC). Mx. Fernandez emphasized the importance of recognizing, respecting, and valuing diverse identities as a critical foundation for building inclusive, safe, and discrimination-free communities.
Participants were provided with a deeper understanding of gender diversity and the role of every individual in fostering acceptance, equality, and respect for human rights.
Following the SOGIESC discussion, Mr. Wilfredo J. Aporongao, City GAD Officer, discussed City Ordinance No. 543, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of Zamboanga City. He highlighted the ordinance's provisions, protections, and mechanisms aimed at safeguarding individuals from discrimination based on s*x, gender, s*xual orientation, gender identity and expression, and other protected characteristics. Mr. Aporongao encouraged participants to become advocates of equality and to help create communities where everyone can live free from prejudice and discrimination.
As part of the program, the Sinunuc LGBTQIA+ Ikatlong Lahi Association also conducted its Selection of Officers, marking an important step in strengthening community organization and leadership within the barangay. The election provided members with an opportunity to actively participate in shaping the direction of their organization and advancing initiatives that promote the welfare and empowerment of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the community.
The Pride Caravan reflects the continuing commitment of the City Government, through the City GAD Services and its partner organizations, to promote gender equality, inclusivity, and the protection of human rights. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, the initiative seeks to build safer and more welcoming spaces for all, regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity and expression, or s*x characteristics.
