Reports from the Field

The weather has been rough recently, and with the strong currents, we've seen an alarming amount of plastic and other debris in Tubbataha. Bottles, plastic bags, food wrappers, and debris are scattered throughout the park. Here in South Islet, CG Sn1 Derwin Calalin diligently picks up the seemingly endless stream of plastic mineral water bottles and food wrappers floating on the water.

The problem of plastic pollution is global, and while we continue to do our part to clean up, we need everyone to help reduce plastic waste at the source. Remember, every piece of plastic we use and discard has the potential to end up in places like Tubbataha, affecting the delicate balance of our oceans.

Mama Ranger Diaries

Oh, Those Colors!

The end of the diving season in Tubbataha always brings a sense of melancholy, even if it could be so exhausting. How could it not, with sights as breathtaking as these?

This season, I managed to make only four trips to Tubbataha. During these trips, I was determined not to miss a single dive, knowing that once the season ended, I would be confined to my desk for months, left to dream of diving here. Now is the perfect time to revisit photos from past trips and relive those memories.

I recently stumbled upon a photo taken in 2017 by my photographer friend, Yvette Lee of Discovery Fleet . I would position myself in cracks and caverns so she could capture these moments, giving me something to look back on during times like this. This photo seems to be from Jessie Beazley Reef, with its overhangs and crevices covered in soft corals and sponges. It’s truly a sight to behold!

I miss Tubbataha so much!

Types of Coral Reef in the Philippines🐠

Fringing, Atoll and Barrier Reefs: What are the difference?

The most common type of reef is the fringing reef. This type of reef grows seaward directly from the shore. They form borders along the shoreline and surrounding islands. In the Philippines, fringing reef in Cagayancillo, Palawan is one example.

When a fringing reef continues to grow upward from a volcanic island that has sunk entirely below sea level, an atoll is formed. Atolls are usually circular or oval in shape, with an open lagoon in the center. That makes Tubbataha Reef, the paradise of blue, grounds to be considered as an Atoll Reef.

Barrier reefs are similar to fringing reefs in that they also border a shoreline; however, instead of growing directly out from the shore, they are separated from land by an expanse of water. This creates a lagoon of open, often deep water between the reef and the shore. In the country, we have this only unique barrier reef and is found in the Visayas, the Danajon Park Double Barrier Reef.

Coral reefs are important because they bring in billions of dollars to our economy through tourism, protect coastal homes from storms, support promising medical treatments, and provide a home for millions of aquatic species.

However, threats continues to prevail up to these days. Pollution, overfishing, destructive fishing practices using dynamite or cyanide, collecting live corals for the aquarium market, mining coral for building materials, and a warming climate are some of the many ways that people damage reefs all around the world every day.

Let's be the change for a .🌊
What are the types of Coral Reefs have you encountered so far?🤗
