On May 30, 2025, the United States Government Alumni Association - USGAA Zamboanga launched Juana Grow, a one-day urban gardening workshop held in Barangay Divisoria. The initiative aimed to empower young women to combat food insecurity through sustainable gardening and micro-agroenterprise.
Juana Grow is a flagship initiative under the Life Skills pathway of the Learning to Earning Pathways (LEaP)program, which also includes Digital Skills, Work Readiness, and Civic Engagement. The workshop also introduced participants to the P2E and YOMA platformsโdigital spaces that connect youth to skills development and real-world opportunities.
Participants engaged in a series of practical and interactive sessions. Sir Jeffrey Sereรฑo opened with a talk on the Food Loop, emphasizing the importance of sustainable food systems and mindful consumption. This was followed by Sir Jomer Mukailโs session on urban gardening, where he introduced the innovative and space-saving Gardenator system. Participants then took part in a hands-on gardening activity to apply their learnings. The final session, led again by Sir Sereรฑo, focused on financial literacy, equipping participants with the basics of budgeting and turning gardening into a source of income.
By blending sustainability, livelihood, and learning, Juana Grow sowed more than just seeds, it cultivated life skills, confidence, and a shared vision for community resilience.
