Assisi Development Foundation (ADF) is leading an initiative in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Basilan called “Pagyabong 2030.” The PhilSEED Learning Center is pleased to host this convergence effort in Zamboanga Sibugay, which initially covers the municipalities of Titay and Kabasalan.

As part of the initiative, the Assisi team engages the barangay health workers (BHWs) and the barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) of Brgy. Gomotoc in an orientation and planning session for the pilot run to be conducted in the barangay.

Immediately after the PhilSEED Learning Center turnover, we were delighted to welcome the first organization to conduct a training at the new center, our friends and partners at ASA Philippines Foundation.

More than 50 farmers from Zamboanga Sibugay came together for an assembly and a series of learning sessions focused on agroforestry and regenerative agriculture.

It was a meaningful way to begin the journey of our new learning center, bringing farmers together, sharing knowledge, and strengthening practices that nurture both livelihoods and the land. 🌱

: Indigenous Agricultural Knowledge Systems (IAKS) in Java and Mindanao represent a profound connection between culture, nature, and sustainable food production. Through environmentally conscious practices like crop rotation and polyculture, Indigenous farmers maintain soil health and biodiversity without chemical inputs, offering vital, nature-aligned solutions to modern crises such as climate change and food insecurity. Despite facing threats from modernization and land loss, this generational wisdom—transmitted through rituals and storytelling—demands active protection. Integrating IAKS into contemporary education and policy is essential for empowering Indigenous communities and fostering a resilient, sustainable future for all.

It’s been sunny and hot in this part of the country for the past few months. While the crops, plants, and flowers are still managing to survive, we need to prepare for more extreme conditions.

Some ways we can prepare:

Conserve water and use it wisely.
Set up rain catchers or water catchment systems to collect water during occasional rains.
Practice companion planting, such as planting bananas alongside other crops to provide shade and help create a more favorable growing environment.
Mulch around plants to protect the roots, reduce evaporation, and retain soil moisture.

With approximately 250 square meters of garden beds, we will try to grow many of the vegetables we consume. We produce our own growing medium from organic matter available around the farm and make and use our own organic pest-control preparations.

Greater self-reliance in food production can be an important foundation for resilience, strengthening our ability to feed ourselves, make local decisions about our food, and become less vulnerable to disruptions in food supply.
