International Coastal Clean-up Day 2025 at Zamboanga Golf & Beach Resort

September 20, 2025, the Zamboanga Open Water Swimming Club hosted this year’s International Coastal Clean-up Day at the Zamboanga Golf and Beach Resort, reaffirming its commitment to the Sports for Nature Framework, a global initiative that ensures sports contribute positively to nature and communities.

The event gathered volunteers from Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Hugalodo, and the Zamboanga Runners Club. It began with an orientation on the beginnings of ICC movement and a situationer on marine plastic pollution. Volunteers were then divided into two teams: a land team that combed the shoreline and a water team, supported by a kayak and a stand-up paddleboard.

By the end of the clean-up, participants collected about 54 pounds of marine debris. The waste was segregated and all data were logged in the Clean Swell App by Ocean Conservancy, ensuring contributions to the global database on marine litter.

The activity concluded with a group photo, celebrating not just cleaner coastlines but also the role of sports communities in advancing environmental action. For the Zamboanga Open Water Swimming Club, this clean-up was more than a volunteer effort, it was a demonstration of how athletes and sports groups can safeguard rivers, lakes, and oceans for future generations.

The Zamboanga Open Water Swimming Club is pleased to announce that we’ve joined hands with the Sports for Nature Framework 🌿.

We believe that open water swimming isn’t just a splash in the lake or ocean, it’s a relationship within nature’s depth and mystery, a playground we must enjoy and protect. As athletes who love both the thrill of the swim and the beauty of our surroundings, we know it’s vital that our sporting events think about how they affect both our beloved earth and the people who live upon it.

This year, in-line with the International Coastal Clean-up 2025, our efforts extend beyond just picking up litter. We’re on a mission to inspire a culture of caring for our precious waters and the communities around them. With every stroke we take and every gathering we host, we proudly align ourselves with the Sports for Nature movement, striving for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.

In 2022, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted. This framework set out 23 targets to stop the decline of our precious biodiversity by the year 2030. One of the main goals is to tackle pollution especially that plastic that seems to be everywhere these days.

Now, this ties right in with International Coastal Clean-up Day happening in 2025. Every bottle, plastic bag, or bit of trash we pick up from the beach goes a long way in protecting our marine friends and works towards those GBF targets. 🌊🐠

Join us in this global mission. Mark your calendars for September 20, 2025, and come along to the Zamboanga Golf & Beach Resort between 6 AM and 9 AM for ICC 2025. Let’s make GBF targets possible

Did you know? SDG 14, which is all about LIFE BELOW WATER, has a noble aim to conserve and use our oceans, seas, and marine resources in a way that doesn’t harm them. One of its key goals is to cut down on marine pollution by the year 2025, especially plastic and other waste.

This is why events like the International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICC 2025) are so important! Every little piece of trash we gather from our beautiful shores brings us closer to this big, global goal. 💙♻️

👉 So, mark your calendars! Join us on September 20, 2025, from 6 to 9 in the morning at the Zamboanga Golf & Beach Resort, and let’s roll up our sleeves together for cleaner oceans and a brighter, sustainable future.

Nogas Island in Anini-y Antique is more than scenic beauty—it's an ecological treasure. Its vibrant coral reefs, expansive mangrove forests, and endangered Philippine Megapode (Tabon bird) make it a biodiversity hotspot worth preserving.

As Dr. Lisa Paguntalan-Marte emphasizes, protecting this island requires our collective effort. Simple actions matter: admire corals without touching them, keep mangroves clean, and share its significance with others.

This isn't just about conservation—it's about safeguarding our natural heritage. Let's work together to ensure Nogas Island thrives for generations.
