SEPTEMBER 21 | International Day of Peace

Peace is not an event. It is a practice.

Today the world marks the International Day of Peace under the theme "Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day"—a call that honors the everyday architects of peace: the people who build it quietly, locally, and without waiting for permission.

This is the same conviction that carries CAMINO DE PAZ, our observance of National Peace Consciousness Month under the theme "Kapayapaan Pagtibayin, Kaunlaran Paigtingin." Peace grows where it is invested in—in classrooms, in communities, in one another.

Invest in peace today. Then again tomorrow. And the day after that.

SEPTEMBER 21 | Anniversary of the Signing of Proclamation No. 1081

Fifty-four years ago today, Proclamation No. 1081 was signed, placing the entire Philippines under martial law. It would be announced to the nation two days later, on 23 September 1972.

We remember what followed: the thousands detained without charge, the tortured, the disappeared, the families who are still waiting for answers. We remember the journalists silenced, the students who did not come home, the ordinary Filipinos who found the courage to say no.

This is why we invite our young people to the conversation. Join our youth townhall on the 54th anniversary of the Martial Law declaration, on 23 September—with the Social Sciences Department and La Liga Historia Zamboangueña–AdZU Chapter.

Never forget. Never again.

CAMINO DE PAZ 2026 | Walking the Path of Peace ✨

This September, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University joins the nation in observing National Peace Consciousness Month—a month-long invitation to deepen our understanding of peace, strengthen our commitment to dialogue, and take part in the shared work of building communities where peace and development can flourish together.

Guided by this year's theme, "Kapayapaan Pagtibayin, Kaunlaran Paigtingin," the Ateneo Peace Center, through the Social Development Unit, gathers a series of activities under CAMINO DE PAZ—the way, or path, of peace.

Rooted in the University's commitment to peace education, interreligious dialogue, student formation, and meaningful engagement with our communities, this year's observance invites the Ateneo community to remember, to learn, to speak, to create, and to celebrate peace.

September 9 | Zamboanga Siege Commemoration

Thirteen years ago today, Zamboanga held its breath. Today, it breathes.

We remember the lives lost, the homes reduced to ash, and the thousands who fled with only what they could carry. But we also remember what came after: neighbors rebuilding side by side, regardless of faith or beliefs.

Peace is not the absence of conflict. It is the daily choice to keep choosing each other.

SNAPSHOTS | Launching of the 2026 National Peace Consciousness Month

On September 8, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) opened its observance of the 2026 National Peace Consciousness Month at the Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago—beginning CAMINO DE PAZ, the Ateneo Peace Center's series of six activities under this year's national theme, "Kapayapaan Pagtibayin, Kaunlaran Paigtingin."

In his opening message, University President Fr. Ernald M. Andal, S.J. spoke of what peace means to a community that has come through violence. There is a deeper sense of the word to us now, he said. Peace does not mean carrying on as though nothing had happened.

The program was held on the eve of the thirteenth anniversary of the 2013 Zamboanga Siege. A moment of remembrance and silence was observed for the communities deeply affected by the conflict.

The afternoon closed at Our Lady's shrine in front of Canisius, where the College Campus Ministry led a prayer and an offering of flowers for the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

CAMINO DE PAZ advances SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)—an institution that teaches peace and refuses to look away from its own history is doing what that goal asks. And SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)—because no part of this series belongs to a single office. A month built alone would have proved the opposite of what it set out to say.

Real stories sparked brave questions and honest conversations as young people from schools, universities, and youth organizations across Zamboanga gathered at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) for the EDJOP Campus Conversation.

The youth-led forum brought together director Katski Flores, co-producer Joyette Jopson, actors Elijah Canlas and Kakie Pangilinan, and moderator Rogin Eribal for an open exchange on speaking up, confronting difficult realities, and the role of young people in shaping public life.

AdZU extends its sincere gratitude to Hon. Kim Villaflores, delegations from Pilar College of Zamboanga City, Saint Joseph School Foundation, Inc., Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School–Calarian, Western Mindanao State University, and Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University, as well as VERDAD Organizations, CAYA Initiatives, and the AdZU community for being part of the meaningful conversation.

EDJOP opens in cinemas nationwide on 16 September 2026.
