Butuan City commemorated the 128th Philippine Independence Day with patriotic ceremonies, flag-raising activities, wreath-laying rites, cultural performances, and community gatherings that highlighted the nation’s hard-earned freedom and the enduring spirit of Filipino unity.

During the celebration, City Mayor Law Fortun emphasized the significance of the Balangay in understanding the true essence of freedom, stating, “Pinapaalala sa atin ng Balangay na hindi tayo isang bayan na naghihintay lamang na hubuhin ng iba. Noon pa man ay may kakayahan na tayong hubugin ang sarili nating kapalaran. At marahil dito natin mauunawaan ang tunay na kahulugan ng kalayaan.”

The mayor’s message aligned with the spirit of the Independence Day celebration by highlighting Butuan’s rich maritime heritage and the legacy of the Balangay as symbols of self-determination, innovation, and resilience.

His remarks underscored that freedom is not merely a historical achievement but a continuing responsibility to shape the nation’s future through unity, leadership, and active citizenship. Through commemorative activities and cultural presentations, the event encouraged residents to reflect on the sacrifices of past generations while embracing their role in building a stronger and more progressive community.

A more organized, safer, and efficient transport system is taking shape in Butuan City as the City Government moves to address the concerns of transport cooperatives and operators while strengthening traffic management across major road networks.

Mayor Law Fortun convened a dialogue with transport groups together with Vice Mayor Reynante Desiata, Councilor Clint Dabalos, and representatives from the City Traffic and Transportation Management Department (CTTMD) to discuss pressing concerns affecting the local transport sector.

The meeting further discussed measures to accelerate permit processing, including the proposed issuance of a Certificate of Compliance for operators who have already complied with documentary requirements while awaiting permit approval, provided that roadworthiness and safety standards are met. The Certificate of Compliance will serve as a temporary authorization, allowing drivers and operators to continue operating legally while their permit applications are being processed and approved.

The dialogue underscored the City Government of Butuan's responsiveness to the needs of the transport sector, with city leaders actively engaging stakeholders and expressing support for measures that will improve operations, road safety, and regulatory processes. The positive reception of the concerns raised reflects the administration's commitment to collaborative governance and to developing a transport system that is efficient, orderly, and beneficial to both transport operators and the riding public.

The City Government of Butuan continues to advance its digital transformation efforts with the successful launch of the Business Inspection and Verification System (BIVS). The system is designed to streamline inspection and verification processes, BIVS aims to make business permit and licensing services faster, more efficient, and more accessible for local businesses.

BIVS is a web and mobile-based platform that enables the management, recording, and monitoring of inspection and verification transactions. Through the system, designated verifiers can process and track requests online, while field inspectors can conduct inspections and submit reports in real time. By digitizing these processes, BIVS helps improve accuracy, enhance monitoring, and reduce processing time, resulting in more responsive government services for the business sector.

The launch of BIVS highlights the city's commitment to innovation and the modernization of public service delivery through technology. The Business Inspection and Verification System (BIVS) was developed by the City Information and Communications Technology Department (CICTD), through its Information Systems Development Section (ISDS) and Data Center Management Division, and was formally accepted through a ceremonial signing led by Mayor Law Fortun and Atty. Moshi Ariel S. Cahoy of the City Business Permits and Licensing Department (CBPLD).

Living with Cerebral Schistosomiasis, Alrose Baloro, a mother of three deom
Brgy. Florida, unable to work, and raising her children alone after being left by her husband, shares how much the First 3-Month Pay-Out Subsidy for Eligible Indigent Solo Parents in the City of Butuan means to her.

With heartfelt gratitude, she talks of how the assistance came at the right time, allowing her to buy school supplies for her children as classes begin. More than financial aid, the subsidy represents hope, relief, and a helping hand for a mother striving to give her children a better future.

She carried burdens that no mother should have to face by herself. Dependent on the support of her parents and siblings, she worried every day about how to meet her children’s needs and prepare them for school. Through programs like this, the City Government of Butuan, through the City Social Welfare Development Department, continues to uplift vulnerable families and ensure that solo parents like Ms. Baloro receive the support they need to overcome challenges, provide for their children, and move forward with renewed hope and dignity.
