๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ช? Japanese scientists confirmed that asteroid Ryugu contains all five nucleobases essential for DNA and RNA. By analyzing just 5.4 grams of material returned by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft, researchers identified adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, and uracil, the molecules that make up the genetic code of all known life.
This is the first time a single asteroid has been found to contain all five of these essential building blocks, giving scientists an remarkable glimpse into the chemistry that existed before life began on Earth.
However, this does not mean that life was found on Ryugu. Instead, the discovery suggests something just as fascinating, the fundamental ingredients connected to life can form naturally in space without the presence of living organisms. Because asteroids are ancient leftovers from the early solar system, they provide scientists with an understanding of the chemical processes that existed billions of years ago โ long before life emerged on Earth.
If these essential ingredients are common throughout the universe, it raises an exciting possibility, the chemistry needed for life may exist far beyond Earth, increasing the chances that life could emerge elsewhere in the cosmos.
