On ๐๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ฅ ๐๐, ๐๐๐๐, the Parish of San Nicolas de Tolentino was founded by Augustinian missionaries, it quickly became a stronghold of Catholicism, a tradition that remains dominant today. The parish, spanning 51 barangaysโgrew around a church, convent, and school built on land owned by the Church itself. Over time, devotion to St. Nicholas of Tolentine took root, with his feast celebrated every September 9 and 10.
The townโs story is marked by survival against frequent Moro piracy that once terrorized coastal communities in the Visayas. Early residents sought refuge on Simbaham Hill before eventually relocating to the lowlands, where the town was named after a massive โdaoโ tree used in building the convent.
