Alfred Lothar Wegener was a German climatologist, geologist, geophysicist meteorologist and a polar researcher who lived from November 1, 1880 to November 1930.

He studied weather patterns, glaciers, and Earth's landforms. He taught at universities in Germany and Austria, and joined several research expeditions to Greenland to study polar weather and ice sheets.

He was primarily known for his achievements in meteorology and as a pioneer of polar research but he is most famous for proposing the Continental Drift Theory in 1912. He explained that all continents were once joined as one huge supercontinent called Pangaea, which slowly broke apart and moved to their present positions over millions of years.
His hypothesis was not accepted by mainstream geology until the 1960s, when numerous discoveries such as palaeomagnetism provided strong support for continental drift, and thereby a substantial basis for today's model of plate tectonics. Wegener shows that bold ideas and careful observation can change how we see our world.
