HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Long time ago, there was a river that existed in the place. During rainy seasons the adjoining area of the river was being flooded. Thus it makes the sand embanks the river. This sand was called "pantar" in Ilocano. Because of this embankment of sand, the place served as a dock for fishermen's bancas. Since then, they name the place "Pantalan" derived from the word "pantar".
And as the years past by, the process repeatedly during rainy season, until such time the river died naturally. As the river died, people modified the name "Pantalan" to "Patalan" which is the name of the barangay until now. DATE OF ESTABLISHMENT - 1850
"Patalan" is one of the oldest settlement in Paniqui, for it's being along the river that once upon a time became a water highway between Manila and Pangasinan and the Ilocos Region. The Barangay was first setled by the Pangasinenses as a village around 1770 and by the Ilocanos around 1840 and finally established as a barrio in 1850. SITIOS INCLUDED IN IT'S JURISDICTION
The sitiois included in it's jurisdiction during the Spanish Regime around 1850 were Cayanga, Samput and CariΓ±o. The sitios included in it's present jurisdiction are:
1. TIMBUGAN - located in the eastern part of the barangay. It was formerly fishing ground. It's name was derived from the word "Kimbogan" meaning to stir the water unclear in order to catch fishes.
2. UMANGAN - located in the southern part of the barangay. It was formerly forest area. It's name was derived from the word "Uma" meaning to clear the forest for agricultural purposes.
3. LORENZA - located on the western part of the barangay. It was formerly a fertile land. It's name derive from the name "Lorenza", the first settler in the place. ORIGINAL FAMILIES / SETTLERS

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Barangay Patalan is situated in the municipality of Paniqui, Province of Tarlac. It has a total land area of 328.3138 hectares and it is bounded in the north by Barangay Cayanga,
in the south by Barangay Buenlag Gerona, Tarlac,
in the east by Barangay CariΓ±o,
and in the west by Barangay Dapdap. It is composed of four (4) Puroks and three (3) Sitios namely;
Purok Banawag, Centro, Kislap, and United,
and Sitios Lorenza, Timbugan and Umangan. It's distance to major points are the following:
1. Poblacion - six (60 km.
2. 12 km to Poblacion of Ramos which is the nearest municipality
3. Provincial Capital - 27 km.
4. Provincial Highway - 20 km.
5. National Highway - 7 km. Barangay Patalan is an agricultural barangay. The terrain characteristics are 100% plain and it has two types of soil, which is 90% sandy loam and 10% clay loam. These types of soil are fitted for rice, vegetables, sugar canes and crops like; camote, monggo and turnips. It's climate is under category of Type 1 and has two pronounced seasons, the dry season during months of January to April and the wet season during the months of May to December. Since it is an agricultural barangay, the major occupation of the people is farming. Most farmer plants rice only during wet season, because of lack of irrigation system. They used to plant vegetables and crops like camote, monggo and turnips for their second cropping.
