ACEN INVESTS ₱9 BILLION IN NEW SOLAR, BATTERY PROJECTS IN ZAMBALES

ACEN Corporation is investing ₱9 billion to expand its renewable energy operations in Zambales through two major projects: the 300-megawatt Palauig Solar 2 development and a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system.

The projects are expected to increase clean energy capacity in Luzon while helping store excess solar power and support grid stability, strengthening the country’s transition toward a more reliable and sustainable energy system.

SABLAYAN GAINS UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE STATUS

Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro has gained international recognition after UNESCO designated the Matibay na Bayan ng Sablayan Biosphere Reserve as one of 14 new biosphere reserves worldwide in 2026. The designation makes Sablayan the Philippines’ fifth UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Covering about 257,838 hectares, the reserve includes mountain forests, coastal waters, coral reefs, and Apo Reef Natural Park. It also provides critical habitat for the tamaraw, a species found naturally only in Mindoro, while supporting agriculture, fisheries, ecotourism, and biodiversity conservation.

PHILIPPINE MANGROVES STORE CARBON WHILE PROTECTING COASTAL COMMUNITIES

Mangrove forests in the Philippines are powerful “blue carbon” ecosystems that capture carbon dioxide and store large amounts of carbon in their vegetation and waterlogged sediments, where it can remain for centuries or even longer.

Beyond carbon storage, mangroves help reduce wave energy, stabilize shorelines, limit erosion, and provide important nursery habitats for fish, crabs, shrimp, and other marine life. Protecting and restoring these forests can therefore support climate resilience, biodiversity, fisheries, food security, and coastal livelihoods at the same time.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS MAKING ASIA’S EXTREME WEATHER RISKS MORE DANGEROUS

Across Asia, climate change is increasingly interacting with extreme weather, environmental degradation, and human vulnerability. Hotter and drier conditions can worsen wildfire risk, warmer air can contribute to heavier rainfall, and rising sea levels can make storm-driven coastal flooding more damaging.

Scientists stress that climate change does not cause every typhoon, flood, drought, or wildfire on its own. But human-caused global warming is changing the conditions in which these hazards occur, while deforestation, poorly planned development, weak infrastructure, and inequality can further increase their impacts on communities.

PHILIPPINES RANKS AMONG WORLD’S TOP COUNTRIES FOR ENDEMIC BIRDS

The Philippines is one of the world’s most important centers of bird endemism, with 761 recorded bird species and 274 species found nowhere else on Earth, according to the 2025 Checklist of Philippine Birds by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines.

Its thousands of islands have allowed bird populations to evolve independently over millions of years, producing unique species such as the Philippine Eagle, bleeding-heart doves, hornbills, kingfishers, owls, flowerpeckers, and sunbirds. This exceptional diversity also makes habitat protection especially important, as the loss of an endemic species in the Philippines can mean its extinction worldwide.

PHILIPPINES, THE OCEAN CLEANUP TEAM UP AGAINST RIVER PLASTIC POLLUTION

The Philippine government has entered into a five-year partnership with Dutch nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup to strengthen efforts against plastic pollution in the Pasig River and other major waterways. Led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the initiative will focus on capturing floating waste before it reaches Manila Bay and the ocean.

The partnership includes the planned use of Interceptor technology, along with technology transfer and capacity building for Philippine agencies and local partners. Authorities are also evaluating possible sites for additional interception systems, including areas along the Pasig and Meycauayan rivers.
