IN-PHOTOS I Hands-On Conservation: ICCEM Conducts Tissue Culture Activity with Native Tree and Crops
The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) recently conducted a tissue planting activity using eggplant (Solanum melongena), pepper (Capsicum frutescens), and katmon (Dillenia philippinensis), a tree from the Dilleniaceae family that is endemic to the Philippines on July 20, 2023 at ICCEMโ€™s Molecular and Biotechnology Laboratory to provide a hands-on experience for the participants and raise awareness about the importance of plant conservation.
The activity aimed to introduce the basic concepts and techniques of plant tissue culture and allow the participants to learn about the process of plant growth and development in a controlled environment.
Heading the said activity were Mr. Edmark Bulaong, a faculty member, and Ms. Mary Angella Tolentino, a researcher, both from ICCEM. The participants included ICCEM staff, interns from Tarlac State University (TSU), and students from the Departments of Environmental Science and Statistics of the College of Science (CoS), and the Department of Social Science of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS).
To ensure that the participants were equipped with the necessary skills, basic laboratory protocols were first discussed, particularly the aseptic technique. On the first day, the growing medium was prepared and sterilized using an autoclave. On the second day, the tissue culture was carried out in a dark room. The growth of calluses was then regularly monitored.
With the increasing threat of climate change and environmental degradation, activities such as this are crucial in promoting sustainable practices and preserving biodiversity.

Enlightenment meets admiration as American students participating in the Fulbright-Hays Language Project engage in a thought-provoking Cultural Discussion on Philippine Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, led by esteemed speaker Dr. Shirly C. Serrano, at Central Luzon State University.

Amidst the lush greenery of Central Luzon, minds open wide to the astounding richness of Philippine ecosystems and the pressing need for environmental preservation. Dr. Serrano's expertise, coupled with the students' eager curiosity, sparks a profound exchange of ideas, igniting a collective commitment to safeguarding the nation's natural treasures for generations to come.

Together, they take a step towards fostering global awareness and mutual responsibility in nurturing our planet.

IN PHOTOS | PEST D-Tech conducts drone flight operation

The Parrot Disco-Pro AG drone, funded by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) through a previous project, underwent testing at the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) Oval to evaluate its flight capabilities, stability, and overall performance.

Designed for mapping and surveying, this fixed-wing drone comes equipped with a high-precision GPS system, a 14-megapixel camera, and a Parrot Sequoia sensor that captures Green, Red, Red-Edge, and Near Infrared wavelengths to highlight crop health. It can fly for up to 45 minutes on a single charge, making it ideal for a range of applications, including agriculture, construction, and environmental monitoring.

The PEST D-Tech team, along with interns from Tarlac State University (TSU) and students from the Departments of Environmental Science and Statistics at CLSU, evaluated the performance of the drone in various flight modes and conditions. The testing was conducted at the CLSU Oval, which proved to be an ideal testing ground due to its spacious and obstacle-free environment.

The drone performed exceptionally well, demonstrating its ability to fly smoothly and accurately while maintaining a stable flight path. The researchers were impressed with the drone's autopilot feature, which allowed it to fly autonomously and follow pre-programmed flight paths, making it useful for mapping and surveying applications, such as crop health monitoring.

With the growing demand for drone technology in various industries, the Parrot Disco-Pro AG is poised to become a game-changer in the field of aerial mapping and surveying. The successful drone flight testing at the CLSU Oval is a testament to the university's commitment to innovation and cutting-edge research.
