Mechanics for the Public Speaking Competition
Focus: Position Paper Presentation

Overview
This competition aims to promote critical thinking, persuasive communication, and academic writing through the integration of position paper writing and public speaking. Each section will select one representative to compete for public speaking; that is, delivering a speech based on their original position paper.

Mechanics

• Selection of Representatives
Each section shall select one (1) student representative who has written the best position paper on any relevant and debatable topic or issue.
Selection will be based on the quality of the written paper as evaluated by the subject teacher (e.g., EAPP teacher).

•Preparation for Public Speaking
The chosen representative will use their position paper as the basis of their speech.
Revisions and modifications to the original paper are allowed, as long as they help align the content with the public speaking rubrics.

•Rubric Orientation
The EAPP teacher assigned to each section will discuss the official public speaking rubrics with their respective representative prior to the competition.
This is to ensure clarity of expectations and fair preparation.

• Competition Proper
All section representatives will compete in a public speaking event where they will deliver their speeches in front of an audience and a panel of judges.
Speeches must be based on the student’s position paper and must adhere to the given time limit (e.g., 3–5 minutes).

• Evaluation and Judging
A uniform public speaking rubric will be used by all judges during the competition.

The rubric will assess key components such as:
1. Content (Stand, Claim, Counterclaim, Evidences) - 25 pts.
2. Public Speaking (Delivery & Nonverbal Communication) - 25 pts
3. References & Citations (APA 7th Edition) - 20 pts
4. Originality & Avoidance of Plagiarism - 20 pts
5. Grammar, Mechanics, & Organization - 10 pts
6. Declaration of Winners
Winners will be announced based on the total score from the judges.
