ABSTRACT

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Rizal Law, we should look back on the way Jose Rizal has been taught and constructed in textbooks and classrooms. Beyond requirement and routine, what have we truly come to understand? What does the law want us to learn?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ambeth R. Ocampo is Senator Gil J. Puyat Professor of History at the Ateneo de Manila University of the Philippines. He writes Looking Back, the longest-running editorial column on history for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He authored several books, with the most recent being Cabinet of Curiosities: History from Philippine Artifacts (2013) and the 35th anniversary edition of Rizal Without the Overcoat, which has been in print since 1991.

📜 TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY | June 14, 1951

On June 14, 1951, Republic Act No. 646 was signed into law by President Elpidio Quirino, officially chartering the Knights of Rizal as a public corporation.

RA 646 recognized the Knights of Rizal as an organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and living the ideals and teachings of our National Hero, Dr. José Rizal. Through this law, the organization was granted legal status and entrusted with the mission of fostering patriotism, civic consciousness, and love of country among Filipinos.

More than seven decades later, the spirit of RA 646 continues to inspire generations to uphold Rizal’s values of education, integrity, peaceful reform, and service to the nation.

As we commemorate the signing of RA 646, let us reflect on Rizal’s enduring legacy and our shared responsibility in building a more informed, united, and progressive Philippines.

“Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan.” — Dr. José Rizal

📣 CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS 📣

The Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum and the Proposed Reframed General Education Curriculum portend drastic changes in the educational landscape of the Philippines. These suggest that, 70 years after the approval of the Rizal Law, the life and writings of our national hero no longer have a place in Filipino classrooms or consciousness.

Students, teachers, and researchers of history are confronted with the questions: Why Rizal? Is he still relevant to today’s Philippines?

To explore these questions and more, the History Department of the University of Asia and the Pacific invites you to the Rizal Studies Conference 2026, entitled “Rizal: the Man of Many Projects.”

During the conference, keynote speakers Prof. Ambeth Ocampo and Dr. Clement Camposano will share their insights and expertise on Rizal studies. The conference will also include panels in which researchers will present fresh perspectives on yet unexplored facets of Rizal’s life and work.

The conference will take place on June 18 and 19 in the Dizon Auditorium of UA&P. Register now through this QR code in this poster or through this link: https://tinyurl.com/Register-Here-Rizal-Conf-2026
