October is the Month of the Holy Rosary. 🌹🙏

To honor Our Lady Regina Rosarii, the Queen of the Holy Rosary, we shall share daily, throughout the month, the events, blessings, and beautiful experiences we received before, during, and after the making of the 71-foot statue of Our Lady Regina Rosarii—a sacred landmark that has welcomed millions of pilgrims and visitors since 2010.

Let us honor our Blessed Mother by remembering the many blessings she has brought into our lives and by praying the Holy Rosary together.

Day 5– Building and Serving in the Rain

Jojo’s work was hampered by the incessant rain, yet with perseverance and prayer, the web of steel for the statue’s foundation began to take shape—steadily, quietly, as if guided by grace.

While the work on Our Lady continued, we turned our hearts to serve those affected by the floods. One day, we journeyed to San Ildefonso Church in Tanay, not knowing what awaited us. To our surprise, we were met by a sea of people, weary and hungry, longing for rice, food, and hope.

Relief goods were carefully packed at our Motherhouse in Quezon City. But during distribution, concern grew that the truckload of supplies might not be enough. With no hesitation, S. Matthe Brasil and S. Merly climbed into the 10-wheeler truck to repack the bags right there—ensuring that every person would receive their share.

No one went home empty-handed. Each family received a pack of relief goods and hygiene kits, along with the silent message: You are not forgotten. Mary walks with you.

CONTEMPLATIVE PAUSE with Mo. Eppie

Yesterday, on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi Mo. Eppie invited us to pause, rest, and let go to quiet ourselves and make space to reflect on God’s love present in all creation.

St. Francis teaches us to love and care for every creature, great and small, recognizing them as our brothers and sisters in creation. His deep love for Mother Earth reminds us that creation is not something to simply use, but a gift entrusted to our care.

This spirit of love for creation is also at the heart of the advocacy of the Dominican Sisters of Regina Rosarii through RAK-M — Random Acts of Kindness for Mother Earth.

Let us practice kindness not only toward one another, but toward every little creature and every part of creation. Even the smallest act of care can become a prayer for our common home.

As St. Francis prayed:

“Laudato Si’, mi Signore!”
Praised be You, my Lord, through all Your creatures.

May our moments of rest lead us to deeper gratitude, compassion, and action for Mother Earth—our common home.

DAY 4: THE SCULPTOR WHO LISTENED TO THE MOUNTAIN

He was only twenty-four years old when he sculpted the first Regina Rosarii statue in 1998. Since then, I have learned to trust Jose “Jojo” Barcena for the Regina Rosarii statues we have raised through the years. He made the one in Agan, Tagum, Davao. He also made Our Lady in the City, standing on top of the roof deck of our Motherhouse.

So when the inspiration came to build a great statue of Our Lady at Regina RICA, I looked for Jojo.

One day, I found him sitting quietly on the grass at the highest peak of RICA. He was not measuring yet. He was not drawing yet. He was simply there, meditating, contemplating, listening. Jojo never begins a project immediately. He studies the wind factor. He looks at the view. He observes the area. He feels the height of the mountain. He lets the place speak to him.
I asked him, “Jojo, can you make a 50-foot statue?”

He looked at the mountain, and with quiet confidence he said, “Sister Eppie, I think I can make a 71-foot one.”

And he did.

That was Jojo’s gift. He did not only sculpt cement and steel. He listened to the land. He respected the mountain. He allowed Our Lady to rise from the very heart of RICA.

Today, when pilgrims look up and see Regina Rosarii standing on the hill, they may not know the quiet beginning of that great work: a young sculptor, now trusted by us through many Marian dreams, sitting silently on the grass, discerning how high Our Lady wanted to stand.

And truly, Mama Mary stood high enough to be seen, but gentle enough to welcome everyone home.

Day 3– Letting Go, Standing Together

We had envisioned a grand celebration to mark the groundbreaking—the symbolic beginning of construction. But Typhoon Ondoy and the floods had changed everything. Our hearts were heavy. Our community was grieving.

Instead of festivities, we gathered in a makeshift tent for a humble Holy Mass, celebrated by Fr. B**g Sanchez, our parish priest. Together, we offered the Rosary, lifting up the names and needs of our people—still reeling, still recovering.

After the Mass, we made our way up the hill, our shoes caked with mud, our hearts bound in prayer. We let go of our planned fiesta fare, choosing instead to be in true solidarity with our suffering neighbors. For lunch, we shared saging saba and water. Nothing fancy. Just enough. And it was holy.

That day taught us that when we let go of grandeur for the sake of compassion, grace multiplies. It was not a celebration in lights—but one in love. And Our Lady surely smiled.
