On August 15, 2026, the The Trinity Project, the flagship environmental initiative of Tuason Development Foundation, Inc. (TDFI), in partnership with DavNor Provincial Sports and Youth Development Office (PSYDO), conducted a Coastal Clean-Up and Mangrove Planting Activity as part of Linggo ng Kabataan 2026.

The activity gathered young environmental advocates from the Girl Scouts of the Philippines – Davao del Norte Council and Red Cross Youth – Davao del Norte Chapter, who collectively helped remove 194 kilos of waste from the coastline. Meanwhile, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines – Davao del Norte Council contributed to coastal restoration by planting 700 mangrove seedlings. 🌱

The activity was graced by Vice Governor Clarice T. Jubahib; BM Helen Mae I. Discaya, SK Provincial Federation President; Hon. Ronald S. Eliot, RMP, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources; Ms. Jozel S. Sanchez, representing Tuason Development Foundation, Inc. (TDFI) together with the Trinity Project Team, the corporate foundation of Hijo Resources Corporation; and Mr. Giovanni I. Gulanes, PSYDO PG Department Head.

This collaborative effort demonstrates the power of youth participation, community action, and strong partnerships in protecting our coastal ecosystems. Together, we continue to turn environmental responsibility into meaningful action—one cleanup, one mangrove, and one young environmental champion at a time. 🌿💙

🌱 Every Tree Counts: Understanding Hijo’s Carbon Sequestration Potential

When we talk about addressing global warming, one of nature’s most powerful solutions is already around us—our forests, mangroves, soils, and vegetation. Through carbon sequestration, natural ecosystems capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and store carbon in different carbon pools, helping reduce the amount of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.

At Hijo Resources Corporation, our approximately 100-hectare beach forest and 9-hectare riverine mangrove area play an important role in this natural process. Recent carbon stock assessment identified several carbon pools within Hijo’s natural resources, including tree species, soil organic carbon, forest litter, understory vegetation, palm species, and riverine mangroves.

📊 The assessment recorded an estimated 22,247.33 tons of carbon (tC) stored across these carbon pools. Among the assessed pools, tree species accounted for 11,235.35 tC, while soil organic carbon accounted for 10,767 tC—highlighting that carbon is stored not only in the trees we see, but also beneath our feet.

This data gives us a better understanding of the carbon value of Hijo’s natural ecosystems and provides an important scientific basis for strengthening our environmental management, conservation, and restoration efforts.

The data collection was made possible through the initiative of Hijo Resources Corporation, through its corporate foundation, Tuason Development Foundation Inc. (TDFI), under its environmental flagship initiative, the Trinity Project, in partnership with the University of Southeastern Philippines – College of Agriculture and Related Sciences (USeP-CARS) BS Forestry students along with DENR - CENRO New Corella and the City Government of Tagum.

🌿 Protecting forests and mangroves is more than planting trees—it is protecting natural carbon stores that help our planet breathe.

At Hijo, we continue to believe that what we measure, we can better understand; and what we understand, we can better protect.

On August 14, 2026, the University of the Philippines Mindanao presented two undergraduate research studies that contribute to the scientific understanding and conservation of Hijo's rich biodiversity: BeeSPRO, which investigates the identification of stingless bee species and the phytochemical and bioactive properties of their propolis, and a molecular ecology study on the detection of Entamoeba histolytica and Blastocystis in long-tailed macaques from the Hijo Forest.

The research was presented by Mae A. Responte, PhD, Lowela Siarot-Onggo, PhD, Jay Ryan L. Erbito, and Feliza Mae Boquecosa. The BeeSPRO study highlights the remarkable potential of stingless bee propolis as a rich source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and promising anticancer properties, reinforcing the importance of conserving healthy forest ecosystems that support these vital pollinators.

The presentations were attended by Ms. Mariana Josefina T. Solitaria, of TRAIN and a member of the Tuason family; Mr. Gabriel Erico O. Zapico, Operations Head of Tuason Development Foundation, Inc. (TDFI); representatives from the City Government of Tagum through the City ENRO Office; and DENR CENRO–New Corella.

The activity forms part of the science-based environmental conservation and resource management initiative of Hijo Resources Corporation, implemented through Tuason Development Foundation, Inc. (TDFI) under its flagship environmental program, The Trinity Project. By fostering partnerships with leading academic institutions, government agencies, and conservation partners, HRC and TDFI continue to integrate scientific research into their sustainability initiatives—ensuring that environmental stewardship is guided by evidence, innovation, and collaboration.

Hijo Forest continues to serve as a vital refuge for biodiversity. The rare fern Helminthostachys zeylanica (locally known as tukod-langit) has been identified within the forest and is now being considered as one of the Philippine sampling sites for an international collaborative population genetics study between the University of the Philippines Mindanao and National Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan).

The study is being led by Prof. Junaldo A. Mantiquilla, PhD, Faculty Member of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, whose research aims to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure, and connectivity of Helminthostachys zeylanica across its Asian distribution. The inclusion of Hijo Forest underscores its ecological significance and its role in advancing science-based biodiversity conservation.

Through The Trinity Project—the flagship environmental initiative of Tuason Development Foundation, Inc., the corporate foundation of Hijo Resources Corporation—we remain committed to protecting our natural ecosystems while supporting scientific research, conservation, and sustainable environmental stewardship.

Together, we continue to bridge science and conservation for a greener future. 🌱💚
