Noong Setyembre 21, 1972, nilagdaan ni Ferdinand E. Marcos ang Proclamation No. 1081, na naglagay sa buong Pilipinas sa ilalim ng Martial Law. Ang petsang ito ay hindi lamang marka sa kalendaryo. Ito ang simula ng isang madilim na yugto sa kasaysayan ng bansa kung saan ang kapangyarihan ng estado ay lumawak, habang lumiit ang espasyo para sa malayang pagpapahayag at pagtutol.

Hindi lamang takot ang iniwan ng panahong iyon. May mga pahayagang ipinasara, mga estasyong pinatahimik, at mga mamamahayag na inaresto. May mga Pilipinong dinetine, tinorture, pinaslang, at sapilitang nawala. Ang mga ito ay hindi lamang kuwento na ipinasa-pasa ng isang henerasyon. Kinilala mismo ng Republic Act No. 10368 ang mga biktima ng summary ex*****on, torture, enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, at iba pang malubhang paglabag sa karapatang pantao noong rehimen ni Marcos.

Noong 2018, iniulat ng Commission on Human Rights na 11,103 claimants ang kinilalang karapat-dapat sa monetary reparation ng Human Rights Victimsโ€™ Claims Board, bukod pa sa 125 kasong kinilala ng Board mismo. Ang pondo para sa reparasyon ay nagmula rin sa โ‚ฑ10 bilyong ill-gotten wealth na na-forfeit pabor sa Republika.

Sa panahong ang takot ay maaaring maging dahilan upang manahimik, may mga Pilipinong piniling magsalita, mga mamamahayag na nagpatuloy sa pagsusulat, mga estudyanteng nagprotesta, mga pamilyang naghanap ng kanilang mahal sa buhay, at mga ordinaryong Pilipinong piniling huwag kalimutan ang mga nangyari.

Dahil ang kasaysayan ay hindi lamang tungkol sa mga taong nasa kapangyarihan. Ito rin ay tungkol sa mga taong naapektuhan nito. Limampuโ€™t apat na taon na ang lumipas, ngunit ang mga tinig na iyon ay hindi dapat manatiling bulong sa mga pahina ng libro.
