This World Oceans Day, we are proud to introduce ALON: A Children’s Diving Manual!

Diving is a valuable skill to have, but it is not easy to come by. Together with Habilin - Kids For Kids Philippines, we have transformed their diving programs into a children’s book that acts as a kid-friendly guide to help the children from our coastal communities in Batangas learn how to dive—and you can help out too!

Pre-orders for ALON open today! For every purchase of our donation packages, you will be providing a child from our coastal community our children’s diving manual, and giving them the opportunity to reconnect with our oceans—and you can even grab a copy for yourself!

Find out more and pre-order now through the links below!

Reef Check Philippines is featuring photographers & artists that truly inspire people through the beauty of their work.

This this earth day we are featuring the photographer, Jonah Veridiano . As a dive professional he inspires his students to love the ocean by showing them the ocean and inspiring them through his photos too. Check out his page to learn more!

___________
What is your favorite reef / dive site, where is it located and why?

A dive site very close to my heart is Verde Island. Located in Batangas, right in the middle of the coral triangle, it is dubbed as “The center of the center of marine shorefish biodiversity” by researchers that regularly find several new species of fish, coral, and nudibranch during their surveys.
___________

What is your favorite reef creature and why?

Boasting one of the quickest reaction times and best camouflage in the animal kingdom, it’s hard to dispute the frogfish as the rockstar of the reef. How can you not fall in love with that face?

________

What is your favorite reef creature and why?

Apart from reducing my overall carbon footprint by ditching single-use plastics and the unnecessary usage of fossil fuels, i try to contribute to diver education by increasing awareness and making sure that my students have proper training before entering the water. As a full time dive instructor, I believe it is our responsibility to make sure that the next generation of divers become stewards of the ocean.

__________

What is your favorite reef / dive site, where is it located and why?

This is really hard to choose and since I think a lot of people would choose Tubbataha I will do a shameless plug for my favourite island in the sun Apo Island in Dauin, Negros Oriental. Aside from the beautiful reefs and marine life, the laid back people of the island are always welcoming and hospitable and the island’s history of unparalleled protection and management of their marine resources is inspiring. Apo Island is what I call the marine protected area that launched a million other protected areas since they hosted so many study and learning tours for others to learn how to implement marine conservation projects.

__________

What is your favorite reef creature and why?

My favourite reef creatures are the sea turtles. They are so magnificent and ancient. Knowing the length of their lives and their life cycle is just impressive considering all the odds they face from the time they were laid as eggs on beaches.

__________

Why do you think we should protect the ocean?(OR) What do you do to help protect the ocean?

Aside from working for a marine and fisheries conservation organization, I also promote responsible and ethical scuba diving and underwater photography to remind fellow divers that the way we conduct ourselves underwater has a bigger impact on reefs than we think. Harassing and manipulating creatures for a good photo leads to destruction of habitats and worse death of the very creatures we are trying to capture on photographs.

Protecting our oceans also helps us protect our food security since more than 50% of protein for Filipinos come from seafood and fisheries products so as we say at Oceana: Save the Oceans and Feed the World.
