In celebration of (June 25), communities and LGUs across the country are once again rolling up their sleeves for massive tree-planting activities. But planting a tree every year isn’t just a good deed, it is actually 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝘄.
Under the 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟮 (Republic Act No. 10176), all provinces, cities, municipalities, and barangays are mandated to carry out tree-planting activities, especially during Arbor Day.
The law also states "𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲-𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲 (𝟭𝟮) 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 (𝟭) 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿."(Section 8)
That means if you're 30 today, you should have planted and cared for, at least 19 trees by now.
Sadly, despite being law, this green responsibility isn’t widely known or practiced. As deforestation continues to threaten our environment, maybe it’s time we take this mandate more seriously, not just for compliance, but for the future of our planet.
