✨ CREATIVE NONVIOLENCE ✨
👑 David as a teacher of nonviolence? Hard to believe! Later in his reign, he would arrange for Uriah’s death to satisfy his own lust for Bathsheba. Yet, before becoming king, David showed remarkable acts of what we now call creative nonviolence.
📌 Example 1: The Cave at Engedi
While hiding in a cave, David has the perfect chance to kill Saul, who enters unaware. Instead, he cuts off a piece of Saul’s mantle and later tells him:
“See and be convinced that I plan no harm… I have done you no wrong, though you are hunting me down to take my life.” (1 Sam 24:12-13)
📌 Example 2: The Desert of Ziph
David infiltrates Saul’s camp at night. Abishai offers to kill Saul with one strike, but David refuses. Instead, he takes the king’s spear and water jug, later taunting Saul’s general and shaming the king into a change of heart.
💡 David’s occasional nonviolence was strategic. Jesus makes it a way of life!
📖 In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls for radical love of enemies:
✅ “Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back…” (Luke 6:35)
✅ “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36)
🔹 David spared Saul because he was ‘the Lord’s anointed’ (1 Sam 26:23).
🔹 Jesus calls us to love our enemies because we are ‘children of the Most High’ (Luke 6:35).
📌 Matthew’s version: “Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matt 5:48)
📌 Luke’s version: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36)
❤️ The word for “merciful” (oiktirmón) is rare, appearing only here in the Gospels. It echoes God’s covenant love in Exod 34:6 and Ps 103:8. If we claim to know God, we must extend that mercy to all.
🤔 Something to reflect on:
If Jesus made nonviolence and love of enemies central to His teaching, why has Christian practice been so slow to embrace it?
⚖️ To make it concrete:
Which is closer to Jesus’ teaching—the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole?
🙏 A Short Prayer for Peace (St. Francis)
“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”
