โ UP Hingyap acknowledges the courtโs decision acquitting Frenchie Mae Cumpio and Marielle โMayeโ Domequil of charges of illegal possession of fi****ms and explosives. This acquittal affirms what has long been asserted: that the evidence used to justify their arrest and detention was deeply flawed and could not withstand judicial scrutiny.
โ
โ At the same time, we express grave concern over the conviction of Frenchie Cumpio and Maye Domequil for financing terrorism. This ruling sustains their continued deprivation of liberty despite the absence of credible proof that their work as a journalist and a church lay worker was connected to any act of terrorism. The charge rests on testimonies and interpretations that have been widely questioned, including by the Court of Appeals in earlier rulings that cautioned against the careless labeling of human rights advocates as terrorists.
โ
โ This outcome highlights a troubling contradiction. While the court recognized that the alleged weapons were not proven to be in their possession, it nevertheless upheld a conviction that continues to treat legitimate community work, fundraising, and advocacy as grounds for criminal liability. Such a precedent places journalists, church workers, and human rights defenders in a position of constant risk, where lawful civic engagement may be reinterpreted as criminal intent.
โ
โ UP Hingyap stands in solidarity with Frenchie Cumpio and Maye Domequil, their families, and the communities they serve. We join the call to continue pursuing all legal remedies to overturn this conviction and to uphold the principle that defending human rights, serving communities, and practicing journalism are not crimes. Justice must be consistent, evidence-based, and free from political influence. Anything less undermines public trust in the justice system.
