🌱 What if a school could grow more than students?
What if it could grow healthier crops, greener spaces, and future environmental stewards too? 🍃✨

Every meaningful change begins with a simple act of support—and today marks the beginning of another journey toward building greener and more climate-resilient schools.

The Tacloban Mountaineering Advocates Club (TAMAC), in partnership with Plan International Pilipinas, officially launched Project S.I.M.U.L.A. (School in Motion for Urban Learners Agriculture) under the EcoTayo: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Challenge.

Project S.I.M.U.L.A. was designed to support schools with existing agricultural initiatives by helping strengthen and enhance their facilities through practical and sustainable interventions. For its pilot implementation, the project partnered with Tacloban National Agricultural School (TNAS)—the only agricultural school in Tacloban City.

As part of the initiative, the project supports the establishment of a compost facility, the integration of a drip irrigation system into the school's existing rainwater harvesting system, and the enhancement of the school's landscape through its citrus tree planting activity. These interventions aim not only to improve agricultural productivity but also to demonstrate how simple, nature-based solutions can contribute to climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

Beyond these interventions, Plan International Pilipinas, through TAMAC, also extended its support by providing the materials needed for the project and sponsoring prizes for the school's NutriFun Run, an activity that helps raise funds for the continuous improvement of TNAS' agricultural facilities.

More than constructing facilities, Project S.I.M.U.L.A. is about creating opportunities for students to learn by doing. It transforms biodegradable waste into compost, harvested rainwater into a sustainable water source, and agricultural spaces into living laboratories where learners can develop a deeper appreciation for agriculture, environmental stewardship, and sustainable practices.

Indeed, this is only a SIMULA—a beginning that we hope will continue to grow alongside the students, teachers, and the entire TNAS community.

Activities like Rapid Species Inventory and Assessment are more than just documenting wildlife. Every bird identified, every mangrove monitored, and every reptile recorded helps us better understand the ecosystem we are trying to protect. 🌏

As part of the "𝐈𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐨?: 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤" project, one of the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) initiatives of 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐓𝐚𝐲𝐨: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities, TAMAC volunteers, LNU Biology students and alumni, and the eco park's caretakers documented the biodiversity thriving within 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤, last July 23-24, 2026.

From native wildlife like the Mangrove Blue Flycatcher (𝘊𝘺𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢), Philippine Sailfin Lizard (𝘏𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴), and Striated Heron (𝘉𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢), to vital mangrove species such as 𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘱. and 𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘱., every record adds to the growing inventory of life that makes Paraiso a 𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒆. 🍃

This inventory served as the foundation for protecting one of the remaining urban mangrove forests in Tacloban City. Because when we know what species are present, we can make informed decisions to conserve them and the habitats they depend on.

Mangroves are among the Philippines' most valuable natural defenses against climate change. They protect our coastlines, support fisheries, store carbon, and provide refuge for countless species.

Let us continue to discover the marvels of mangroves, because Paraiso isn't just a place to visit, it's a home worth knowing, and a sanctuary worth protecting. ☘️

Growing more than bamboo—we're growing resilience, one culm at a time. 🌱🎍

Every meaningful project starts with a simple first step. Today, the Tacloban Mountaineering Advocates Club (TAMAC), in partnership with Plan International Pilipinas, kicked off the preparations for Phase 1: Bamboo Propagation under the "Bamboo Growing: Strengthening Communities Through Green-Gray Infrastructure" project, one of the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) initiatives of Project EcoTayo: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities.

Together with our volunteers and partners, we prepared the future bamboo nursery by cleaning and clearing the designated site. We also spent the day preparing the potting medium by mixing soil with rice hull, ensuring that everything will be ready for the bamboo propagules in the next phase of the project.

While today's work may seem simple, these preparations are an important part of building a successful nursery. Every cleared space, every sack of prepared soil, and every helping hand brings us one step closer to restoring ecosystems and promoting greener, more climate-resilient communities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Barangay Council of Brgy. 98 Camansihay, led by Hon. Adan Esmeres, and to everyone who volunteered their time and effort to make today's activity possible. Your commitment reminds us that meaningful environmental action begins when communities work together.

This is only the beginning, and we're excited for the next phases of this journey.

Because every thriving bamboo grove starts with a well-prepared foundation. 💚🎍

Fortunately, the training proved that there's much more to native trees than their tongue twisting scientific names. The training was an opportunity to learn, understand our role in protecting the environment, and of course get our hands dirty (literally) 🤣.

As part of the EcoTayo: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities Project, Plan International Pilipinas, in partnership with Tacloban Mountaineering Advocates Club, conducted a Training on Nursery Seedling Production under the 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆-𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗼: 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗩𝗠𝗥𝗙) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, last July 25 at the CENRO Nursery, Brgy. 101 New Kawayan, Tacloban City.

Beyond the lecture, ka-TAMACs actively participated in hands-on activities — from media mixing, plot filling to setting up the nursery chamber and planting native tree seedlings — the somewhat unfamiliar scientific names turned into an enriching learning experience. ✨

The activity reminded us that environmental stewardship begins with small but meaningful actions. Every seedling prepared, every bag filled, and every lesson shared brought us one step closer to creating greener, more resilient communities. 🌱

The activity was spearheaded by Mr. Marito Barillo, Forester from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO), whose expertise and guidance inspired participants to appreciate the importance of native tree propagation and sustainable forest restoration.

The day was filled with laughter, slight competition in who’s the best in filling pots 😜, teamwork, muddy hands, new knowledge, and a growing passion.

As part of the EcoTayo: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities Project, Plan International Pilipinas, in partnership with Tacloban Mountaineering Advocates Club (TAMAC) and Science Quester Unlimited (SQU), successfully conducted the MNG: Map, Nurture, and Grow Project Phase 1 on July 22 at the TACRe Hub, Tacloban City.

Prior the actual fieldwork, a Tree Nurturing Orientation was facilitated by Sir Marito Barillo, a Forester from City ENRO, who provided an in-depth discussion on the proper methods of caring which emphasized the importance of regular maintenance, appropriate nurturing techniques, and community responsibility in promoting healthy tree growth and improving long-term survival.

Complementing this session was the GPS and GIS Orientation and Demonstration, led by Ma’am Madelyn Aclo, where participants were introduced to the practical applications of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies in environmental monitoring and resource management.

Through hands-on field activities, volunteers successfully geotagged a total of 136 trees within the TACRe Hub, establishing an organized geospatial database that will support future monitoring, assessment, and conservation initiatives.

The activity served as a platform for participants to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in environmental conservation by combining sustainable tree management with modern geospatial technologies.

🌳 Every mapped tree is a step toward better conservation, and every nurtured tree is an investment in a more resilient and green future. 🌳

Ngatanan Para Han Ngatanan: Sowing the Light of Knowing

What started as a simple idea during the Capacity Development Training back in December turned into a meaningful reality. It was, indeed, the most fulfilling way to close the month of March.

Last March 29, 2026, members of the Tacloban Mountaineering Advocates Club (TAMAC), in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of San Juanico, successfully conducted Ngatanan Para Han Ngatanan: Sowing the Light of Knowing at Salvacion Elementary School, Tacloban City.

The activity aimed to conduct an inclusive and artistic climate change awareness campaign on in-school children of Salvacion Elementary School in Tacloban City which focused on spreading awareness on climate change adaptation and improving the students’ understanding of disaster preparedness and environmental protection on hazards that the Brgy. is high risk of, specifically, landslide, soil erosion, heatwave, and flooding.

This initiative is part of the EcoTayo Project: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities of Plan International Pilipinas, a movement that empowers young people with the knowledge, skills, and purpose to take meaningful climate action.

From the planning sessions to the actual implementation, every step was driven by one shared goal: to educate, inspire, and empower the next generation to become
stewards of the environment.

It wasn't just about teaching children about climate change—it was about helping them realize that even the smallest actions they take at school or at home, when done together, can create meaningful change. It perfectly reflects one of TAMAC's core mantras: "Saving the planet and helping the people is better when we do it together."

Despite a few challenges along the way, the event was filled with genuine smiles, laughter, and hopeful voices, with each child making their own promise to take care of nature. The event continuously reminded us that when children are guided with purpose, they can be advocates for protecting our environment.

To all our participants, co-facilitators, volunteers, speakers, partner organizations, and everyone who helped make this initiative possible—from the bottom of our ka-TAMAC hearts, 𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐎 𝐍𝐆𝐀 𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐓!
Your time, energy, and dedication made this activity a success, and it would not have been possible without each one of you.

May we continue to serve our communities with compassion and purpose, especially those who need it most. And may we keep planting seeds of awareness, hoping they grow into a generation that will stand up, speak out, and fight for our environment.

🐝 BzZzZzZzZZZZz… Introducing the n-BEE-s: ECOlonization Project – Phase 1! 🐝

A day buzzing with learning, collaboration, and action because BEE-autiful things happen when communities work together. 🌻

As part of the EcoTayo: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities Project, Plan International Pilipinas, in partnership with the Tacloban Mountaineering Advocates Club (TAMAC), successfully conducted the n-BEE-s: ECOlonization Project Orientation and Hands-on Training last July 21 in Brgy. 101 New Kawayan (Villa Diana Gym and TACRe Hub), Tacloban City.

The activity brought together youth volunteers, environmental advocates, community members, and experts from the City Agriculture Office, spearheaded by Ms. Marikith B. Cordeta, to strengthen community-based pollinator conservation efforts, enhance biodiversity, and promote climate resilience through sustainable beekeeping.

The orientation highlighted the vital role of bees in pollination, food security, biodiversity, and maintaining healthy ecosystems and BEE-cause direct, hands-on experiences leave lasting impressions and practical lessons, the activity also featured an hands-on demonstration on bee colony splitting, where participants observed the proper techniques for establishing new, healthy colonies while maintaining the strength of existing hives. 🐝🍯

Every hive tells a story, and every bee plays a role. Through initiatives like the n-BEE-s: ECOlonization Project, communities are empowered build a more resilient future, one bee at a time. BEElieve it or not… every small action creates a big impact so what are you waiting for? BEE the change. BEE the solution. BEE one of us. 🐝

This year’s Earth Day celebration, dubbed “Urban Bayanihan 2026: An Earth Month Summit for a Resilient and Inclusive Tacloban,” under the EcoTayo Project: Ugnayan sa Klima for Resilient Communities of Plan International Pilipinas, was more than just a celebration of Mother Earth. For TAMAC, it was an opportunity to bring wildlife into the city in the most interactive way possible. BAKA MOST INTERACTIVE BOOTH YARN? 😜

With “Lantaw Kinaiyahan: Wildlife and Ecosystem Conservation Exhibit,” TAMAC members brought wildlife into the youth-led summit on climate action and advocacies.

Wildlife and local biodiversity photographs taken by TAMAC youth members were on display and participants had the chance to learn more about the organization through the Corner, where they discovered TAMAC’s members, advocacies, and initiatives. The booth also offered a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of our region through preserved dry and wet specimens of local fauna. Participants also engaged with wildlife conservation by testing their knowledge in the ✨ mahiwagang ✨Wildlife Quiz Bowl, piecing together local species in the Wildlife Puzzle Challenge 🧩, and finally sharing their commitments for the environment through the Commitment Tree.

Aside from the booths, ka-TAMACs also took part in insightful lectures, slogan and poster-making contest, and a trivia night that was truly out of this world (literally, because it took us all the way to Encantadia like is this luh jet earth day trivia pa ba yornch?!?!)

Through this celebration, TAMAC hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for nature, guided by one of the org’s core principles that says “you cannot conserve what you do not know, and you cannot protect what you do not love.”

May we continue celebrating and protecting Mother Earth—not just on Earth Day, but every day. 🌏✨
