Plan International Pilipinas conducted an orientation on K*K – Kababaihan, Kabakhawan, at Kaligtasan: Mangrove Conservation Advocacy.

The activity was attended by women’s organizations, fisherfolks, and youth from the community.

The orientation highlighted the importance of protecting and conserving mangroves, especially since Brgy. 102 Old Kawayan, Tacloban City is a coastal area. Mangroves help protect the community from strong waves, storm surges, and coastal erosion. They also serve as a habitat for fish and other marine life, providing support to the livelihood of many fisherfolks. 🌊🌱

Old Kawayan Farmers and Youth Attended Sustainable Farming Training ✨🌱

Farmers and youth participants from Brgy. 102 Old Kawayan attended the ANI: Adaptive and New Ideas for Sustainable Farming 101 training today.

This activity was made possible through the partnership of Plan International Pilipinas and the Barangay Council of Brgy. 102 Old Kawayan, Tacloban City.

Before the hands-on training on Lettuce Hydroponics, the facilitator first discussed the basic concepts of CCA (Climate Change Adaptation) and GEDSI (Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion) in climate action. These topics are important in helping communities become more prepared, inclusive, and sustainable in facing the effects of climate change. 💚

We would like to thank Plan International Pilipinas⁠� for this opportunity and for choosing participants from Old Kawayan. We also extend our gratitude to our supportive partner from the City Agriculture Office of Tacloban City, headed by Sir Romelo Anade.

And of course, thank you to all participants from Brgy. 102 Old Kawayan for giving their time and actively participating in this meaningful training.

WATERS OF PLENTY

𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | Every Friday, fisherfolk in Old Kawayan, Tacloban City gather along the waters of the San Juanico Strait to harvest a rich bounty of fish cultivated in one of the region’s most vital marine ecosystems.

Among the day’s catch is the country’s national fish — bangus or milkfish. The harvest offered a glimpse into the livelihood that sustains many families in the coastal community.

Fresh from the waters, these fish will soon find their way to markets across Tacloban City and neighboring areas in Eastern Visayas, eventually reaching the dining tables of many families.

Beyond providing food and livelihood, the thriving harvest serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the environment. Indeed, when people take care of the environment, nature gives back generously.
