September 11, 2001
* The World Trade Center Twin Towers stood in Lower Manhattan, New York City.
* The North Tower and South Tower were among the world’s most recognizable buildings.
* On the morning of September 11, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes.
* Two planes were deliberately crashed into the Twin Towers.
* The South Tower was struck at 9:03 AM, and the North Tower at 8:46 AM.
* Both towers eventually collapsed.
The years following 9•11
* 2,977 people were killed in the September 11 attacks, excluding the 19 hijackers.
* The attacks profoundly changed U.S. national security, airport security, counterterrorism policy, and international relations.
* The United States launched military operations in Afghanistan against al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
* New security measures were introduced at airports and across many government agencies.
* The former World Trade Center site was transformed into the 9•11 Memorial & Museum and the surrounding World Trade Center complex.
* One World Trade Center was later built as the centerpiece of the rebuilt site.

September 11, 2001 → September 11, 2026 = 25 years.
So today is the 25th anniversary of 9•11.a day of remembrance for the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives and for the many families, first responders, survivors, and communities affected by the tragedy.
