In celebration of the Global Weeks of Service (April 18–26, 2026) – Environment, the Subic Metro Executive Lions Club, MJF (SMELC), in coordination with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority – Ecology Department, successfully conducted an SBMA Coastal Clean-Up and Mangrove Propagule Pull-Out on April 23, 2026, at 7:30 AM in Triboa.
The activity gathered dedicated Lions and volunteers who shared a common goal of protecting and preserving our coastal environment. Participants actively engaged in cleaning the shoreline, removing waste and debris that threaten marine ecosystems, while also taking part in the careful pull-out and proper handling of mangrove propagules.
Mangroves play a vital role in coastal protection, acting as natural barriers against strong waves and storm surges, preventing erosion, and serving as critical habitats and nursery grounds for various marine species. Recognizing their importance, the activity emphasized proper handling and management of mangrove propagules to ensure their growth, sustainability, and long-term survival.
The activity also included a short orientation at the Mangrove Nursery conducted by its staff, where participants learned about the 24 different varieties of mangroves and were guided on proper techniques in handling seedlings and propagule propagation for future planting efforts. This learning session provided valuable knowledge that strengthened the participants’ appreciation and understanding of mangrove conservation.
As part of SMELC’s contribution to the initiative, a total of 263 mangrove propagules were turned over to the nursery to support ongoing reforestation and environmental sustainability efforts.
More than just a service activity, this initiative fostered environmental awareness, teamwork, and a deeper sense of responsibility toward protecting our natural resources. It stands as a testament to SMELC’s continued commitment to meaningful service and sustainable community impact.
