The environmental initiative gathered representatives from various sectors, including local government officials, community members, environmental advocates, and academic stakeholders, united in promoting coastal protection and marine ecosystem conservation through mangrove rehabilitation.
The program formally opened with a welcome message delivered by the representative of Ramon Licup, Barangay Captain of Capuy, Sorsogon City, who conveyed the barangayโs gratitude to the participating institutions and volunteers for their commitment to preserving the coastal environment of the community.
An inspirational message was delivered by Dr. Ryan V. Dio, Vice President for Research, Extension and Training (VPRET) of Sorsogon State University, emphasizing the importance of collaborative environmental action and the role of academic institutions in advancing sustainability initiatives and climate resilience efforts in local communities.
Also delivering an inspirational message was Forester Joel L. Ordonio, Officer-in-Charge Chief of the Community Development Services (CDS), who highlighted the significance of mangrove ecosystems in protecting coastal areas, supporting marine biodiversity, and strengthening community participation in environmental conservation activities.
Meanwhile, Ms. Mabelle D. Deuna, Community Development Officer II (CDO II), provided participants with instructions and safety reminders for the coastal clean-up and mangrove tree planting activities to ensure proper implementation and environmental stewardship throughout the event.
Following the program proper, participants proceeded to the designated coastal areas for the clean-up drive and mangrove planting activity. Through the collective efforts of the volunteers and partner agencies, approximately 150 mangrove propagules were successfully planted along the shoreline to help strengthen coastal protection and restore marine habitats in the area.
In addition to the tree planting activity, participants were also able to collect around 10 sacks of waste materials during the coastal clean-up drive, contributing to the preservation of the coastal environment and the promotion of responsible waste management practices within the community.
The activity supports the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaborative environmental conservation efforts and coastal ecosystem restoration initiatives.
The activity reflects the continuing commitment of DENR, Sorsogon LGU, and Sorsogon State University toward environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community-based coastal resource management in support of national ocean conservation initiatives.
