Mission Story: The Unexpected Welcome

"Let’s not go there, Ate Bhing! That place feels heavy,” Gàgà said with concern in her voice. “Aren’t we looking for a person of peace? That house doesn’t peaceful. People say they’re witches!”

I paused then gently replied, “We prayed before we left. If God brought us here, then He must have prepared something for us in this place.”

We stepped forward in faith and walked toward the house. To our surprise when we knocked an elderly woman greeted us with a warm smile.

“Come in!” she said kindly.

We entered and introduced ourselves. Her husband was shucking corn so we offered to help. As we worked and chatted we discovered that they were religious people. I couldn’t help wondering why others would call them witches.

Our visit turned into a joyful, meaningful conversation.

Before leaving we prayed for them and asked if they would like to hear more Bible stories. Their answer was a quick and eager “Yes!”

Gàgà and I walked home with hearts full of joy, thanking the Lord for such a beautiful and surprising encounter.

How often do we let fear, rumors, or assumptions stop us from entering the places where God is calling us? Like the disciples in Luke 10, we are invited to look for “persons of peace,” those whose hearts are open to Him. Sometimes, though, finding them means stepping past the boundaries of comfort, prejudice, or fear.

May we always choose to trust His guidance over our fears.

Mission Story: A Belief About Burials

In our community, there was a pregnant woman who was close to giving birth.

When the day came, she struggled through a difficult labor that lasted three days. Sadly, she did not survive, and the baby in her womb also died because it could not be delivered.

Among the Aeta people, there is a traditional belief that burials must never be done on Mondays or Fridays. According to them, breaking this rule would cause more deaths to follow in the community.

The mother and child passed away on a Sunday.

At that time, there was no embalmer available, and delaying the burial would have caused the bodies to quickly decompose. Some of our Aeta brethren came to my house to ask about this matter.

“Pastor,” they said, “is it really forbidden to bury the dead on Mondays or Fridays?”

“According to the Holy Scriptures,” I replied, “there is no command that forbids burial on these days.” Still, they were not satisfied with my answer and invited me to speak at the wake.

When I arrived, I explained to everyone the truth found in the Bible.

After I spoke, the mother of the deceased approached me and again asked “Is it really true that we shouldn’t bury the dead on Mondays or Fridays?”

I answered, “Auntie, there is nothing in the Bible that forbids this. However, if all of us here start to neglect our bodies and refuse to eat in the coming days then we will naturally grow weak and may even die. So let us take care of ourselves instead of fearing something that God’s Word does not teach.”

The mother and child were buried on a Monday.

By God’s mercy, from that day until now no one has died in our village.

Many of the traditional beliefs in this culture go against the teachings of the Bible. Others place heavy burdens on the people which have no basis in God’s Word. Yet I thank the Lord that He continues to use me as a light in this place.

Please continue to pray for the mission work in the Cabatuan Project. ❤

This week, pray for an Aeta community facing real tension.

Four families recently decided to follow Jesus and be baptized.

Instead of support, they now face strong opposition from their own relatives. That opposition now reaches our Aeta missionaries and our PFM team on the ground.

Pray with us:

Pray for peace and protection over these four families
Pray for softened hearts among their relatives
Pray for courage and wisdom for our missionaries during this tension.

Your prayer is their strength! 🙏

Last December, Ronald Canonoy was ready to go home.

Years of slow progress.
Few visible results.

The kind of weariness that makes a person quietly start packing up the calling they once said yes to.

But God had other plans.

In the weeks that followed, something shifted.

Bible studies that once felt like routine started becoming conversations of real faith. People who had only listened began to ask deeper questions.

Some are now being discipled. They are trained not just to believe, but to one day teach others in their own village.

Ronald Canonoy didn't see this coming. Neither did we.

But this is what Church Planting Movements look like when they're working. It's slow, quiet, and then suddenly alive.

He almost left. God interrupted him instead.

Pray for Ronald Canonoy and the believers he is currently discipling. Pray for wisdom, protection, and continued growth in this season. 🙏
