πŸ’§πŸŒΏ Water connects us, transforms us, and brings healing.

This October 4, on the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, we will gather as one global family to give thanks, celebrate the beauty of all Creation, and share a message of hope with the world.

We will be joined by:
β€’ Analisa Ramsahai, Laudato Si’ Movement Board Director from Trinidad and Tobago, reflecting on β€œWater as Connection.”
β€’ Elizabeth Trice, from the Church of England and The Seedlings Network, sharing β€œImmersion, Transformation and Healing.”

πŸ™ Let us walk together for justice, peace, and care for our Common Home.

Interpretation will be available in multiple languages.

May the spirit of Saint Francis continue to inspire us to live with simplicity, gratitude, and love for all Creation.

The slime that many eaters frown upon might soon help us save the world. Scientists at Tarleton State University (USA) have discovered that extracts from Okra and other slimy plants commonly used in cooking can effectively remove microplastics from water sources.

These plant-based polysaccharides act as natural flocculants, binding microplastics into clumps that can be easily separated from water. In laboratory tests, Okra removed around 67% of the microplastics, and its counterpart achieved 93% removal. A combination of both extracts reached 70% efficiency within 30 minutes. These natural alternatives outperformed traditional synthetic flocculants like polyacrylamide, which can break down into toxic substances.

Eventually, researchers tested the plant extracts on real microplastic-contaminated water from Texas and found that Okra worked best in ocean water, fenugreek in groundwater, and their combination in freshwater. Removal efficiency also varied due to differences in microplastic types, sizes, and shapes across samples, affecting how the natural polymers interacted with the pollutants.

Researchers believe that these plant-based methods can be integrated into existing water treatment systems without the need for new infrastructure, offering a sustainable and non-toxic solution to microplastic pollution.

Plant back what we removed, restore what we damaged, and give abandoned land another chance.

SHOULD WE ALSO RESTORE THE STREET WHEN WE RESTORE A HERITAGE SITE?

The post demonstrates that heritage conservation is about more than just restoring a historic building. The environment of the surrounding street helps define the experiential quality of a place. Although the building is the primary focus, the Civic Improvement of the sidewalks, the addition of safer crossings and bike facilities, landscaping and the introduction of mature trees, helps transform the area from a car-centered design to a public space focused design.

This project demonstrates an important urban planning concept. People engage with heritage through an experience, and not just architecture. Unpleasant urban conditions such as heat and noise, heavy traffic and wide, unpedestrian friendly, sidewalks leave the public Feeling disconnected from the heritage a landmark represents. The opposite is true of a public realm that is comfortable and inviting.

This raises the following question: Should we focus only on protecting historic buildings when we talk about heritage conservation? Should we also be concerned with the design of the public realms and streets that connect them?

In the case of some historic districts, the quality of the public spaces that connect people to the district can determine the success of the district, just as what is preserved in the district can determine its success.

At first glance, it looks like a peaceful, shaded European village square, but it sparks a massive debate over how we design our modern towns. πŸ›‘πŸ›οΈ

The problem is that urban and suburban development across America constantly prioritizes pavement, parking lots, and concrete over natural landscape. When towns strip away large canopy trees for more hardscape, they create severe urban heat islands that bake neighborhoods during summer months.

Trees are high-capacity, living infrastructure. Over decades, their massive root systems and dense canopies perform heavy-duty environmental laborβ€”cooling streets naturally, capturing carbon, and managing stormwater runoff far better than engineered drainage.

The solution requires a fundamental shift in local planning. Instead of treating trees as mere decorative afterthoughts, we must mandate green infrastructure and protect mature canopies in every community development.

Drop a comment below and take a side: Do you believe town squares should prioritize parking and open concrete, or mandate mature trees for shade and climate control? Let's debate! πŸ‘‡
