🎉 Happy Feast of Saint Louise de Marillac!
Every May 9, we honor Saint Louise de Marillac, co-foundress of the Daughters of Charity and patron saint of Christian social workers, the sick, widows, and orphans.
📖 Here's a glimpse into her inspiring life:
Born in 1591, Louise de Marillac never knew her mother and was raised by her father, Louis de Marillac, a member of the French aristocracy. After her father remarried, Louise struggled to adjust and was sent to live and study in a convent, where her desire for a consecrated life first took root.
When her father passed away, financial hardship forced her into a boarding house. There, she developed domestic skills, learned organization, and even discovered herbal medicine — skills that would later serve her well in ministry.
In 1613, she married Antoine Le Gras, secretary to the Queen Mother of France. Though they shared a loving relationship, Antoine’s poor health and eventual death in 1625 brought Louise deep sorrow. During this time of grief, she experienced a profound vision: she saw herself serving the poor while living in community and evangelical simplicity. She later recognized the priest in that vision as Saint Vincent de Paul, who would become her mentor and partner in mission.
In 1629, Louise began working closely with Vincent, helping organize and strengthen the Confraternities of Charity across France. She visited the poor, trained volunteers, ensured financial accountability, and above all, inspired others to see Christ in every person they served.
💙 In 1633, she gathered a group of young women in her home — forming what would become the Daughters of Charity. With wisdom, compassion, and unmatched leadership, Louise shaped a new model of religious life focused on service in the world, not behind convent walls.
Louise died on March 15, 1660, just months before Vincent. She was beatified in 1920, canonized in 1934, and declared Patroness of Christian Social Workers by Pope John XXIII in 1960.
Her legacy lives on through the Daughters of Charity and all those inspired by her life of love, service, and deep faith.
