AWARENESS ๐Ÿ’ก

There are several ways to ensure that your Speech Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist is licensed by PRC and one of the most effective way is to check for the following credentials:

1. Licensure Certificate:
Verify that the SLP or OT has a current and valid license issued by the relevant regulatory body in your country or region. In the Philippines, this would be the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

2. Professional Identification Card (PIC):
Licensed SLPs or OTs in the Philippines should possess a PRC ID card, which includes their registration number, photo, and validity dates.

3. Educational Qualifications:
Confirm that the SLP or OT has completed a recognized degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited institution.

4. Certification from Professional Associations:
(FOR SLP) Check if the SLP is a member of a recognized professional organizations, such as the Philippine Association of Speech Pathologists (PASP) or international bodies like the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) if applicable.

(FOR OT) Check if the OT is a member of recognized professional organizations, such as the Philippine Academy of Occupational Therapists, Inc. (PAOT).

5. Continuing Education:
Ensure the SLP or OT participates in continuing education programs, as this is often a requirement for maintaining licensure and staying updated with the latest practices.

You can verify licensure status by contacting the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) or checking their online verification system at https://www.prc.gov.ph (https://www.prc.gov.ph) ,if available.

At Speech Box Therapy Center, your safety and well-being are our top priorities. We are dedicated to protecting you from pseudo-therapists who could potentially cause more harm than good. ๐Ÿ“š Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are still quite rare in the Philippines?

Currently, only four institutions in the entire country offer this specialized program, each with its own rich history and distinctive approach to training future SLPs.

๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ (๐—จ๐—ฃ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ): UP Manila holds the distinction of being the first university to offer an SLP program in the Philippines, starting way back in 1978. Nestled under the College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP), this program laid the groundwork for SLP education, setting high standards and producing some of the country's finest professionals in the field. UST's program brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm and innovation, offering students new opportunities to delve into this critical healthcare field. This move was a game-changer, bringing high-quality SLP education to the Visayas region and making it more accessible to students outside Luzon.

๐——๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐˜๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฒ (๐——๐—Ÿ๐—ฆ-๐—›๐—ฆ๐—œ): Just two years following CDU, in 2014, DLS-HSI joined the ranks, further expanding the reach of SLP education. This addition provided more options for students eager to join this noble profession. Learn more: https://www.dlshsi.edu.ph/academics/college-rehabilitation-sciences/

While three of these programs are based in Luzon (UP Manila, UST, DLS-HSI), CDU stands alone in Visayas ๐ŸŒ Unfortunately, Mindanao still awaits its first SLP program, highlighting a need for further expansion to ensure nationwide access to SLP training and services.

With such a specialized and limited number of programs, it's crucial to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be an SLP. If they didnโ€™t graduate from UP Manila, UST, CDU, or DLS-HSI, they might be a ๐—ฝ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ผ-๐—ฆ๐—Ÿ๐—ฃ ๐Ÿšจโš ๏ธ

You can verify if someone is licensed to practice speech pathology via: https://online.prc.gov.ph/Verification , and if you encounter a pseudo-SLP, report them to [email protected] to protect the integrity of the profession and ensure the highest standards of care for those in need.

Stay informed and make sure to consult only qualified professionals to get the best care possible. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ฌ

โ—๏ธPARENTS PLEASE BE AWARE โ—๏ธ

Some clinics are using the brand Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Special Education to their services as it is unethical and punishable under the law.

Remember: There's no such thing 3-in-1 service (OT, Speech and Sped) as this is only a marketing strategy. ๐Ÿ˜

Let's be transparent and serve only the best and what is right to our clients especially the small ones.

Occupational Therapy for All

Home Start started as a therapy clinic here in Lucena City, Quezon back in 2019. Teacher April Magnaye, an occupational therapist, founded it. However, due to the current pandemic, its operation had to stop momentarily and this gave her the time to reflect and think about her purpose as a mother, a teacher and as a practitioner.

Talakayan was initiated. Its main advocacy is to reach out to the many Filipino families and teachers who are struggling to manage and care for their children with special needs and abilities particularly now that we have limited ways to get intervention for them. Talakayan encourages its members to communicate and discuss among themselves various techniques and strategies that they can implement at home. The discussion is done weekly and is for free, because we believe that THERAPY IS FOR ALL.

Aside from Talakayan, Teacher April also started a youtube channel HOME START PH where she post informative videos about child development and basic knowledge regarding occupational therapy intervention. This platform is also where recorded videos of Talakayan are uploaded for the general public to view.

To aid the parents in teaching their children at home, LEARNING MAGNET TOY collection was also released. These are sets of magnetic toys that aim to target perceptual and cognitive skills. Instructional videos are also done to guide parents how to use it.
