WELCOME BACK, SEN. BAM! 🇵🇭

Sen. Bam Aquino has been reappointed as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education following the latest changes in Senate committee leadership.

His return to the education panel places him once again at the center of discussions affecting Filipino learners, teachers, schools, and the country’s basic education system.

Sen. Bam has been at the forefront of major education reforms, including his work as principal sponsor of the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, more widely known as the Free College Law, and his leadership of the Senate Committee on Basic Education during a historic period for Philippine education.

The landmark Free College Law helped make tuition and other school fees free in state universities and colleges, local universities and colleges, and state-run technical-vocational institutions.

His reappointment builds on his earlier leadership of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, where he served as chair during the Senate approval of DepEd’s historic ₱1.044-trillion budget, part of the country’s highest education allocation of more than ₱1.34 trillion under the 2026 national budget.

The record funding strengthened support for classrooms, teachers, learning materials, student programs, school feeding, learning recovery, and wider access to quality education.

For students and future Iskolar ng Bayan, this matters because the Senate Committee on Basic Education handles key issues on learning recovery, teacher welfare, student support, inclusive education, classroom needs, literacy, and reforms that shape the foundation of every learner’s academic journey.

As the country continues to strengthen its education system, Filipino students deserve policies that open more doors, reduce barriers, and protect their right to quality education.

Para sa Edukasyon. Para sa Bayan!

ERWIN SAYS MINORITY SENATORS CHECKED ON COLLEAGUES AFTER MAY 13 SENATE INCIDENT

Sen. Erwin Tulfo on Thursday, May 21, disputed claims that no members of the Minority bloc checked on senators affected by the May 13 Senate shooting incident, saying several lawmakers sent messages through their group chat during the height of the situation.

In an interview on Unang Balita sa Unang Hirit, Tulfo said the emotions expressed by Sen. Pia Cayetano were understandable given the fear caused by the incident, but clarified that minority senators did reach out through their shared WhatsApp group.

"Yung kanyang emosyon po ay siguro po dala po ng takot," Tulfo said.

He added that senators from both the majority and minority blocs—including Sens. Kiko Pangilinan, Bam Aquino, Win Gatchalian, and himself—sent messages checking on colleagues during the incident.

Tulfo said he personally sent a message around 9:57 p.m. saying, "Praying for all of you," while Sen. Camille Villar later replied, "Thank you, we're all okay."

"Nag-message naman po kami sa WhatsApp group po namin, ewan ko po kung bakit hindi po nabasa ni Sen. Pia po yun," he said.

The clarification came after Cayetano became emotional during a Senate manifestation on Wednesday, saying she felt hurt that no one from the former majority bloc checked on them following the incident.

"Walang ni isa sa inyong nangumusta sa amin," Cayetano said while recounting the fear experienced by senators, staff, media workers, and Senate personnel during the reported gunfire inside the Senate premises.

She also described how she feared for her safety and had to think about her children during the chaos, saying some staff members were left traumatized by the incident.
