On September 19, 2026, young people from Lipa City and the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos came together in Lipa City, Batangas for ๐ด๐ฐ๐ช๐น๐ถ-๐พ๐จ๐ฝ๐ฌ๐บ ๐ถ๐ญ ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฌ: ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฏ-๐ต๐ฐ๐ป๐ฌ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ถ๐น ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ ๐พ๐จ๐ป๐ฌ๐น๐บ, organized by the The UPLB Microbiological Society.
The day began with a river cleanup at Pamintahan River, where youth volunteers rolled up their sleeves, put their gloves on, and worked together to collect waste and other debris along the riverbanks. More than simply picking up trash, the activity served as a reminder that caring for our waterways begins with communities willing to take action: one piece of waste, one conversation, and one person at a time. ๐ซฑ๐ผโ๐ซฒ๐ฝ
The afternoon continued with an engaging learning session featuring three talks. Two speakers of our very own colony introduced participants to the fascinating world of microbes in contaminated waters, while another discussion explored the health impacts of exposure to them, as well as the importance of environmental responsibility. Participants were able to connect microbiological concepts with the realities faced by communities and ecosystems through the interactive and enjoyable talks we had.
From cleaning the river to learning about the invisible communities of microbes within our waters, the event highlighted an important truth: meaningful environmental change happens when knowledge is transformed into action. ๐ง๐ฌ We hope that MicroWaves of Change becomes more than a one-day activity. May the connections built between the youth of Lipa and UPLB continue to grow, inspiring more conversations, more collaborative initiatives, and more communities to take an active role in protecting our waterways. We hope that every volunteer left not only with memories and photos of the day, but with a deeper understanding of how our everyday choices affect the health of our rivers, our communities, and the environment.
The waves of change may start small, but together, they can ripple far beyond the riverbanks. Hereโs to cleaner waters, informed communities, and a generation ready to make a difference. ๐
