Bilang pakikiisa sa pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Kababaihan, nagsagawa ang San Mateo Municipal College (SMMC) ng isang makabuluhang programa na pinamagatang Womenโ€™s Month Celebration Program na may temang โ€œWE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society.

Marjulie M. Arcaya, ; Municipal Councilor, Hon. Mary Grace C. Diaz; G. Marie Dolores โ€œDollyโ€ Rivera, asawa ni Mayor Bartolome โ€œOmieโ€ Rivera; at kawani ng institusyon, OIC โ€“ College Administrator, Dr. Teresita C. Dela Cruz.

โ€œPatuloy na maging malakas at matibay. Don't just leave, leave a legacy.โ€ - G. Lorenzo

Jhasmine Sophia Amari M. Biboso at Bb.

For the first time in its history, San Mateo Municipal College (SMMC) stands at a defining crossroads. The search for the institutionโ€™s next president has officially begun, marking a historic moment not only for the college but also for the entire San Mateo community. With anticipation building among students, faculty, local leaders, and residents, the launch of the presidential search signals more than a leadership transitionโ€”it represents a collective hope for the future direction, growth, and continued excellence of the municipalityโ€™s homegrown college.

The search is being carried out through the formation of the Search Committee for the President (SCP), a body tasked with identifying the most qualified leader who will guide the institution in the years ahead. The committee was established through Board Resolution No. 33, Series of 2025 and reinforced by SB Ordinance No. 06, Series of 2023, which institutionalized a transparent and representative selection process involving key sectors in education, governance, and the community.

The committee is chaired by Atty. Cristian P. Saba, Chief Legal Counsel of the Municipality of San Mateo, who oversees the entire search process from the announcement of the vacancy to the final recommendation of candidates. He is joined by Mr. Fredelito C. Cabalang Jr., District Supervisor of the Department of Education (DepEd) in San Mateo, Rizal; Dr. Rogelio T. Galera Jr., Regional Director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region IV-A; Dr. Ronald A. Gonzales, President of the Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) Region IV-A and a national officer of the organization; Hon. Mary Grace C. Diaz, representing the Local Government Unit through the Sangguniang Bayan; Ms. Cristina F. Cabusay, Human Resource Management Officer of the San Mateo LGU; and Ms. Marietta C. Lorenzo from the business sector.

Supporting the committee is the Search Committee Secretariat headed by Ms. Oriena B. Degasa, with Ms. Teresa D. Falculan and Ms. Maria Linda C. Verdadero assisting in administrative coordination and documentation throughout the selection process. Together, they ensure that every stage of the searchโ€”from the submission of applications to the evaluation of candidatesโ€”is conducted with accuracy, organization, and transparency.

The committee convened for its first official meeting on December 17, 2025, where members were oriented on their responsibilities and the procedures guiding the historic search for the collegeโ€™s next president. One of the first major steps was the publication of the official Notice of Search in a newspaper of general circulation for three consecutive weeks beginning January 17, 2026, in compliance with national guidelines. The announcement formally opened the opportunity for qualified academic leaders to step forward and be considered for the role of guiding the institution into its next phase of development.
Following the publication, the application period officially opened from January 19 to February 8, 2026. During this period, aspiring candidates were required to submit extensive documentation demonstrating their qualifications and leadership potential. These included an application letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of records, research publications, and a notarized vision and mission statement outlining their plans for the future of San Mateo Municipal College. Applicants also submitted supporting documents such as a birth certificate, medical certificate, drug test results, neuro-psychiatric examination, and a completed Personal Data Sheet.

After the application period closed, the Search Committee Secretariat conducted an initial review of submissions from February 9 to 16 to verify the completeness of documentary requirements. Although twelve individuals initially expressed interest in the position, only ten applicants advanced to the evaluation stage following the preliminary screening. During the review, the committee noted that several applications contained incomplete documentation, particularly regarding proof of research publications and evidence of administrative experience in higher education institutions.
To ensure fairness, the committee decided not to immediately disqualify applicants with incomplete submissions. Instead, formal notifications will be sent identifying the missing requirements, and applicants will be given five days to submit the necessary documents or clarifications. Those who fail to comply within the allotted period may be deemed ineligible to proceed. The committee aims to have at least three qualified candidates advance to the next stage, as required under CHED guidelines; otherwise, the search process may have to be repeated.

The evaluation process follows a structured system based on national standards, assessing candidates in four key areas: professional competence (35%), academic background (15%), performance during the public forum (25%), and the panel interview (25%). The evaluation of professional competence, based on submitted documents, has already been completed, bringing the process one step closer to identifying the collegeโ€™s next leader.
One of the most anticipated stages of the search is the upcoming public forum, where qualified candidates will present their vision and development plans for San Mateo Municipal College. More than just a formal requirement, the forum is expected to become a dynamic platform where ideas, leadership philosophies, and future plans for the institution will take center stage.

Members of the academic communityโ€”including students, faculty, alumni, parents, and representatives from the local governmentโ€”will have the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about their goals for strengthening academic programs, expanding opportunities for students, and positioning SMMC as a responsive and forward-looking institution. The event promises to be an engaging exchange of ideas, offering the community a rare opportunity to witness firsthand how each candidate envisions the collegeโ€™s future.

Scheduled to take place after Holy Week, the public forum is expected to generate strong interest across the campus and the wider community. For many stakeholders, it represents more than a presentation of credentialsโ€”it is a moment to listen, reflect, and imagine the direction the college could take under new leadership.

As the search process continues, anticipation grows across the San Mateo community. For students who see the college as a gateway to their future, for faculty members committed to academic excellence, and for local leaders who view SMMC as a pillar of community development, the choice of the next president carries profound significance. In the coming weeks, as candidates step forward to present their visions and aspirations for the institution, the community will not only witness a selection processโ€”it will take part in shaping the next chapter of San Mateo Municipal College. Whoever ultimately takes the helm will inherit not just a leadership role, but the shared hopes of a college and a community ready to move forward together toward a future of growth, opportunity, and excellence.

Guinayang, San Mateo, Rizal โ€” Students participated in a Fire Prevention Seminar held on March 10 with the theme โ€œSa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi Ka Nag-iisa,โ€ aimed at raising awareness on fire safety and emergency preparedness in line with the observance of Fire Prevention Month this March.

The seminar educated students on the common causes of fire and methods of prevention, while equipping them with practical emergency response skills and the proper use of firefighting equipment. It also reinforced the spirit of โ€œHindi ka nag-iisaโ€ through safety protocols.

Mr. Eli Sochaco emphasized the importance of being well-informed during emergencies in his opening remarks, citing the rising number of fire incidents in communities.

Guest Speaker, FO1 Romnick V. San Diego, delivered an informative lecture highlighting the history and legal foundation of the fire service under Republic Act 6975, explaining the responsibilities and challenges faced by firefighters during emergency response operations.

Students were also taught how to properly use fire extinguishers and participated in a hands-on fire brigade drill organized by FO1 San Diego. During the activity, students learned the proper deployment of fire hoses and were given the opportunity to operate the nozzle, experiencing firsthand the control of water pressure.

โ€œDo not be the cause of an accident, but instead be the starting point of safety,โ€ said Ms. Vilma C. Alfonso, Institute Supervisor of Arts and Sciences, as she delivered the seminarโ€™s closing remarks.

The San Mateo Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Council (SAMMADAC) conducted the 5th Family Counseling Session of its 8th Batch Community-Based Drug Rehabilitation Program (CBDRP) on February 28, on the 2nd floor of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Building. The session emphasized that recovery is not an individual journey alone, but a shared process involving the entire family. From 8:00 in the morning, participants engaged in structured activities designed to promote reconciliation, understanding, and emotional healing.

CBDRP was first introduced and discussed by the program's focal person, Ms. Juliet G. Caparas, followed by Assistant Municipal Administrator, Atty. Jay Antonell M. Quintos, who delivered the opening message and encouraged participants to โ€œkill the old versionโ€ of themselves to embrace a renewed purpose in life. He highlighted that family often becomes the strongest motivation for transformation and change. Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), Dr. Ma. Veronica C. Iringan, followed with an explanation of the sessionโ€™s process and objectives, stressing that families are also deeply affected and must undergo healing alongside the Persons Who Used Drugs (PWUDs). She underscored the importance of breaking emotional triggers from painful past experiences through healthy communication and guided dialogue.

Invited counselors from San Mateo Municipal College (SMMC) also played a vital role in facilitating the session. This included Ms. Vilma C. Alfonso, Ms. Charisma Angeline W. Vargas, Ms. Maria Carmella L. Sucgang, Ms. Angelica J. Celetaria, Ms. Myka L. Yape, Ms. Joanna Lyn S. Diguangco, and Mr. John Harc C. Villanueva. Together with the spiritual directors, Pastor Jing San Pedro and Pastor Marcelino Lim, they ensured that conversations between participants and family members remained respectful, guided, and constructive.

One of the most meaningful highlights of the program was the letter-writing activity, where participants expressed emotions and messages they had long struggled to communicate. The exercise encouraged honesty, emotional maturity, and active listeningโ€”reinforcing that genuine recovery requires truthfulness rather than merely saying what loved ones want to hear. Through this collaborative effort, the session strengthened the commitment of the community to holistic healing and lasting change, and in letting society see a version of people who have once been lost.

This month, we do more than simply celebrate Womenโ€™s Monthโ€”we pause to remember that women are not defined by a single word, a single role, or a single expectation. In the spirit of International Women's Day, we are reminded that a woman is not just โ€œa woman.โ€ She is a force and a flame, a story still unfolding, a universe of dreams, intellect, courage, and depth. She is not confined to the labels society places upon her, nor limited to the spaces history once allowed her to occupy. She is a leader and a learner, a nurturer and a visionary, soft in heart yet fierce in conviction. Women are living legacies in motionโ€”daughters who dare, mothers who mold, sisters who strengthen, and changemakers who challenge what is ordinary.

To empower a woman is to water the roots of tomorrowโ€”to nurture a future that blossoms with courage, wisdom, and boundless possibility. It is to believe in her voice before she gathers the strength to let it be heard, to stand beside her as she steps into spaces once closed to her, and to honor the light she carries into rooms that once felt dim. Womenโ€™s Month becomes more than a celebration; it becomes a powerful declaration of growth and transformation. It reminds us that strength can be gentle yet unbreakable, that leadership can be compassionate yet powerful, and that resilience can shimmer with quiet brilliance. When women rise, they do not rise aloneโ€”they lift families, communities, and generations with them. And in that rising, the world is not merely changed; it is transformed, petal by petal, into something braver, brighter, and infinitely more beautiful.

On February 26, San Mateo Municipal College (SMMC) held its 4th Year Studentsโ€™ Orientation at the San Mateo Municipal Stadium to prepare the graduating class for their transition to professional practice. The program, moderated by Ms. Diana Anne Perez, opened with a prayer, followed by the National Anthem, the Bagong Pilipinas Hymn, and the San Mateo Hymn performed by the Kultura Chorale. This was followed by an inspiring message from Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA), Dr. Ma. Veronica Iringan.

The first session focused on Academic Policy, where the Dean of the Institute of Teacher Education, Dr. Delia P. Jadaone, explained the grading system, and the Institute Supervisor of Arts and Sciences, Ms. Vilma C. Alfonso, detailed the guidelines for Latin honors. To streamline administrative requirements, Assistant Registrar, Mr. Edward Garcia, provided a step-by-step walkthrough of the graduation application process.

The orientation then shifted to Academic Support and Welfare, with Ms. Regina Yutengco discussing exit interview protocols. This was followed by a vital lecture from the Institute Supervisor of Accountancy, Mr. JB Emmanuel T. De Guzman, CPA, on RA 11313 (Safe Spaces Act), reinforcing the institutionโ€™s commitment to a safe and respectful campus environment.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session led by Dr. Iringan, addressing various student inquiries. The program officially closed with a final rendition of the SMMC Hymn, leaving the Batch of 2026 with a clear roadmap toward their upcoming commencement.
