SILENT EXTINCTION 😢

The forest still looks green from far away…
but inside, life is disappearing.

According to the WWF Living Planet Report 2024, average monitored wildlife populations have declined by 73% since 1970.

That means fewer birds in the sky.
Fewer fish in rivers.
Fewer insects, frogs, mammals, and wild voices around us.

This is not just an animal crisis.
This is a warning for humanity.

When wildlife disappears, ecosystems collapse.
When ecosystems collapse, food, water, climate, and human survival are affected too.

Extinction does not always arrive with noise.
Sometimes, it arrives as silence.

🌍 Protect habitats.
🌱 Restore forests.
💧 Save rivers.
🦋 Respect every living species.

Because a silent planet is not a living planet.

UPDATE | Brigada Eskwela 2026: Zero Waste Management Orientation at Maly Elementary School

We are happy to share that as part of this year’s Brigada Eskwela activities, Buklod Tao conducted an orientation on Sustainable Waste Management for the students, teachers, and parents of Maly Elementary School.

This session aimed to raise awareness about proper waste segregation, recycling, and reducing waste in our daily lives.

Thank you to Maly Elementary School for welcoming us, and to everyone who joined and participated actively. Let’s continue to care for our school, our community, and our planet!

El Niño is developing in the Pacific Ocean 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱, now likely to emerge next month, according to the newly released update from NOAA Climate Prediction Center.

The latest forecast also raises the possibility that it could intensify into a rare and historically powerful “Super” (Very Strong) El Niño by end of 2026.

For the Philippines, this developing El Niño could trigger a more intense season by June-July before we shift into drier conditions as early as August or September.

The "peak" effects of this El Niño will likely be from January to June 2027, marked by severe drought and extreme heat, which could trigger widespread water and electricity shortage during the Tag-init Season.

PRESS RELEASE
May 25, 2026

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐚: 𝐀𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

The mass cutting of decades-old trees along Quirino Avenue is an act of ecological violence against the people of Manila, a direct assault on the poor who have been enduring the daily penance of extreme heat, poisoned air, and sudden floods. This act is not simply a technical or bureaucratic detail.

For generations, the trees of Quirino Avenue stood as silent protectors and as the lungs of this community - offering shades to commuters standing under a scorching sun, providing shelter to exhausted workers waiting for a ride home, and giving breathing space to families increasingly choked by concrete and exhaust.

Now, these trees are being reduced to bleeding stumps to make way for another expressway under the disguise of “progress” , thereby, flattening our urban environment and once again, asking the poor to pay the highest price.

Why must "development" always demand the sacrifice of the vulnerable? Why are our cities designed for vehicles and concrete instead of for children, workers, pedestrians, and the elderly?

We refuse to hide this injustice behind bureaucratic language. What is legal on paper is not automatically moral in the eyes of God.

In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis warns against a cruel "throwaway culture" that treats both nature and vulnerable people as expendable collaterals for corporate expansion. This is not stewardship. This is environmental injustice.

The climate crisis is a present, urgent and unquestionable reality. In Manila, every mature tree destroyed is a moral failure. It is a wound inflicted on our common home.

As Church, we stand firmly against every form of development that destroys creation and deepens the suffering of the people.

Caritas Philippines will not remain silent while our sanctuary is dismantled piece by piece.

We call on our public authorities and contractors to halt this destructive tree-cutting immediately, to review these infrastructure projects through the lens of ecological justice, and to listen consistently to the communities who rely on these trees for survival.

We call on the faithful to stand with us.

Demand to keep and defend the remaining green spaces of our cities.
Demand accountability from our leaders.
Demand on a development that gives life, rather than one that leaves us in the shadows of stumps.
