Project Nurture: Caring for Mothers, Building Stronger Communities

Every mother carries more than a child—she carries hope, dreams, and the promise of a new beginning. Yet the journey into motherhood can also bring uncertainty, emotional challenges, and the need for a strong support system. Recognizing this, the Rotary Club of Marikina West launched **Project Nurture**, a heartfelt initiative dedicated to celebrating, supporting, and empowering mothers during one of the most transformative seasons of their lives.

>> A Day Dedicated to Maternal and Child Health

On July 18, 2026, the club brought together 30 postpartum and expecting mothers for a comprehensive three-hour and thirty-minute afternoon of learning, creativity, and genuine fellowship at Kainan sa Bahay Bahayan. The free lunch program, running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., ensured that mothers could nourish both body and spirit throughout the gathering.

The event was made possible through the dedication of Rotary Club members: High Impact President Katrina Frances C. Evasco, Past President Radian Fantone, Ann Nora Fantone, Immediate Past President Kevin Delfino, Ann Krizelle Megu, Rotarian Ryan Cantera, and Rotarian Hagen Alexander J. Topacio — each bringing their time, energy, and commitment to make the day meaningful for every participant.

>> Art as Healing, Connection as Medicine

In partnership with the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation thru Mr. Fernando A. Lazo, the mothers participated in a transformative art therapy session designed not to create perfect paintings, but to provide a safe, judgment-free space to pause, reflect, express emotions, and connect authentically with one another.

For many mothers, especially those navigating the postpartum period, such moments are rare. Between late-night feedings, endless household responsibilities, and the emotional weight of new motherhood, self-care often becomes an afterthought. Through every brushstroke and creative moment, participants were gently reminded that caring for themselves is just as important—and just as necessary—as caring for their children.

The art therapy activity:
- Encouraged creative self-expression as an outlet for stress and emotion
- Fostered peer connections in a supportive, non-judgmental environment
- Eased anxiety and postpartum emotional challenges
- Nurtured mental and emotional well-being—something every mother deserves but often forgets to prioritize
- Created a shared experience that transcended material support, touching hearts and minds instead

>> Gifts That Affirm Worth and Dignity

Beyond the art session, each of the 30 participants received a thoughtfully curated care package:
- Art materials — a lasting reminder that creativity and personal growth matter
- Baby pillow — providing comfort and safety for newborns
- Baby swaddle — offering warmth and security during precious early months

These were not merely tokens of charity. Each item carried a deeper message: *Your child deserves comfort and care, and so do you. Your well-being is important. You are valued.*

>> Shared Meals, Shared Stories

The free buffet meal transformed the gathering into far more than a community outreach event. As the 30 mothers shared food and conversation, they shared their stories—struggles and triumphs, fears and hopes, laughter and tears. Friendships were forged. Isolation melted away. Every mother present was reminded in the most tangible way possible: "You are not alone. You belong to a community that cares."

>> A Holistic Approach to Real Change

What distinguishes Project Nurture from conventional charity is its recognition that supporting mothers means far more than distributing material goods. True support means:
- "Addressing emotional health" alongside physical needs
- "Creating safe spaces" for self-expression and vulnerability
- "Affirming dignity" by showing mothers that they are seen, heard, and valued as whole human beings
- "Building community" where women understand they are part of something larger than their individual struggles

By combining maternal support with art therapy, the Rotary Club of Marikina West demonstrated that holistic care touches not only mothers' physical needs but also their hearts, minds, and spirits.

>> Ripples Far Beyond One Afternoon

Although Project Nurture directly served 30 mothers on July 18, 2026, its impact extends far into the future and throughout entire households and neighborhoods.

When a mother feels supported and valued:
- She is better equipped to care for her child with patience, presence, and emotional availability
- Her own mental health improves, reducing the risk of postpartum depression and anxiety
- She models self-worth and self-care for her children, teaching them that emotional well-being matters
- She becomes a stronger, more confident presence in her family and community

A healthier, more confident mother creates:
- A healthier home environment where children thrive
- Stronger relationships built on emotional presence rather than stress
- A ripple effect that strengthens neighborhoods and communities from the inside out

The comfort provided to newborns today, the emotional confidence restored in their mothers, and the friendships formed during those three and a half hours will continue to resonate long after the event has ended.

>> Partnership as the Foundation of Impact

This initiative reflects the Rotary Club of Marikina West's conviction that meaningful service begins with compassion and grows through authentic partnerships.

The collaboration with the **Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation**—an organization dedicated to preserving cultural heritage and supporting the arts—created a unique synergy: visionary leadership combined with community commitment merged with the transformative power of artistic expression and creative healing.

Together, both organizations demonstrated a crucial truth: lasting impact is created not only through donations, but by investing in people's emotional well-being, dignity, and hope.

>> Every Mother, Every Child, Every Community

Because every child deserves a loving beginning rooted in a mother's emotional health and confidence, and because every mother deserves to know that she is never alone in her journey.

Through Project Nurture, the Rotary Club of Marikina West once again proves that the greatest gift we can offer is not simply what we give—it is the care, confidence, and community we leave behind.

"Project Nurture" represents Rotary's commitment to maternal and child health, one brushstroke, one meal, one moment of connection at a time.

Rotary Club of Marikina West Brings Peace, Health, and Cleaner Energy to Barangays 23 and 24 in Caloocan

Communities flourish when people feel safe in their neighborhoods, healthy in their homes, and confident that someone cares about their future. Inspired by this belief, the Rotary Club of Marikina West, under the leadership of High Impact President Katrina Frances C. Evasco, brought together service, sustainability, and preventive healthcare in a project that touched the lives of residents in Barangays 23 and 24, Caloocan City.

Rather than addressing only one community concern, the initiative responded to several everyday challenges faced by local residents. By combining public safety, renewable energy, eye health, and family well-being into one coordinated effort, the project demonstrated that meaningful service is most powerful when it improves life from different directions.

For many communities, safety begins with communication. To strengthen peace and order, each barangay received six walkie-talkies, providing barangay officials and emergency responders with dependable communication tools that can be used during emergencies, disaster response, and community patrols. In situations where every second matters, clear communication becomes an invaluable resource that helps protect lives and strengthen community resilience.

The project also illuminated more than streets. With the installation of 10 solar-powered lights in each barangay, public spaces became brighter and safer while promoting the use of clean, renewable energy. The lights help residents move around with greater confidence after sunset, creating safer pathways for workers returning home, children, senior citizens, and parents caring for their families. At the same time, they reflect Rotary’s commitment to supporting environmentally responsible solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Health remained another important focus of the initiative. A total of 100 residents—50 from each barangay—received free eye examinations and prescription eyeglasses, giving many beneficiaries the opportunity to see more clearly for the first time in years. Improved vision opens doors to better learning, increased productivity, safer mobility, and greater independence. By addressing vision concerns before they become more serious, the project reinforced the value of preventive healthcare as an investment in long-term quality of life.

Although the project did not specifically distribute maternal health supplies, its benefits naturally extended to mothers and children. Better-lit neighborhoods create safer environments for families, while stronger communication among barangay responders provides greater peace of mind during emergencies. Healthy eyesight among parents and caregivers also contributes to safer homes and more confident caregiving, illustrating how community development ultimately strengthens family life.

What makes this initiative remarkable is the way every component complements another. Public safety is reinforced through reliable communication. Sustainability is promoted through solar-powered lighting. Preventive healthcare improves daily living through accessible eye care. Together, these efforts create a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community where residents are better equipped to face everyday challenges.

Beyond the equipment distributed and services delivered, the project invested in something less visible but equally valuable—community confidence. It reminded residents that progress is not measured solely by infrastructure or technology but by the opportunities people are given to live with dignity, security, and hope.

Through the leadership of High Impact President Katrina Frances C. Evasco, the Rotary Club of Marikina West once again demonstrated that Rotary’s greatest strength lies in understanding what communities truly need and responding with practical, sustainable solutions. Every solar light installed, every walkie-talkie handed over, and every pair of eyeglasses provided reflects Rotary’s enduring promise to create lasting change through service.

In Barangays 23 and 24, that promise now shines a little brighter—in safer streets, clearer vision, stronger community partnerships, and a future where service continues to inspire lasting transformation.

Accompanying President Katrina at the project venue were President-Elect Donvic S. Torio and Ann Kate Morales Chavez along with their kids, and Rotarian Hagen Alexander J. Topacio.

From Five to Two, The Mission Continues: Rotary Club of Marikina West’s Continuing Student Support

For the Rotary Club of Marikina West, sustainability is not only about projects that end when the activity is over. It is about planting hope where it can grow, and ensuring that young lives are given the steady support they need to keep moving forward.

Since Rotary Year 2023-2024, the club has provided scholarship support to five students through their education. Over time, the program has evolved with the students’ journey. Today, only two students remain under the club’s continuing support, reflecting both the realities of life and the long-term nature of a commitment to education.

These two students are currently enrolled at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, pursuing different courses. This reflects the club’s belief that every learner’s future matters, and that sustainability comes from helping students develop skills and qualifications they can use in their chosen paths.

With each installment of support, Rotary Club of Marikina West helps more than tuition and requirements. It helps protect dreams from being delayed or interrupted. It helps students stay focused on learning, persist through challenges, and prepare for a life where they can give back to their families and communities.

To the students who continue their studies, we offer more than support. We offer encouragement, prayers for strength, and our belief in your potential.

Thank you to every Rotarian who made this possible. Your generosity turns education into a lasting impact, one student at a time.

Every parent's greatest dream is to see their child grow up healthy, safe, and full of hope. Through this meaningful initiative, the Rotary Club of Marikina West reached 160 mothers and their little ones in Bontoc, providing polio vaccinations along with essential baby care items, including swaddles, diapers, and pillows. More than delivering aid, the project gave families the priceless gift of protection, comfort, and hope. Every vaccine strengthens a child's future, and every care package reminds parents that a caring community stands beside them—helping every child begin life healthier, safer, and with greater promise.

Together, we go Beyond Limits: More than a donation drive, this project was a promise that no learner should be left behind. From assistive learning tools and educational resources to safety equipment and spaces that inspire belonging, every gift represented an opportunity for a child to learn with confidence, discover their strengths, and dream without barriers. We continue to build a world where differences are embraced, abilities are celebrated, and every child is empowered to shine.
