🌊 Preserve the Coastline: Look Deeper to Protect Our Precious Marine Ecosystem!

Waste that is indigestible to nature is only created by people. Take a close look and realize the harm and hazards your tiny, thoughtless waste may cause. We are hoping that you will join in exploring and safeguarding the wild ocean in ways that will improve its health and, in turn, ensure humankind's future.

We may affect change when we work together. As we dig further, we find that there is an urgent need to save these delicate ecosystems from habitat degradation, overfishing, and pollution. No matter how small or large our actions are, they will all have an impact on our dedication to preservation.

Here are some ways we can be of help:

• Reduce your use of single- use plastic
• Support legislation to curb plastic production and waste
• Recycle properly
• Participate or organize a coastal clean-up
• Spread the word (Stay informed, Be Aware and Do something)
• Support Organizations addressing plastic pollution and environmental issues

🌊 Embracing the Beauty of Our Shores 🌊

The Oceanus Footprints Association conducted a Coastal Clean-Up Drive activity along the coastal area of Barangay Ilocanos Norte, City of San Fernando, La Union last October 28, 2023 at 6:30 in the morning. A total of 10 sacks of assorted garbage debris were collected and segregated for identification and proper disposal.

Every wave that crashes upon the shore holds a story, a secret, and a plea for help. Our coastal treasures are fragile, and it's our responsibility to protect them. 🏖️

In the spirit of unity and conservation, we'll pick up trash, plastic debris, and any other waste that threatens the serenity of our beloved coastline. 🚮

But this event is about much more than collecting trash. It's a testament to the power of community, a chance to educate, inspire, and create awareness about the critical importance of preserving our marine ecosystems. 🌏🌱

Together, we'll be custodians of our oceans, guardians of marine life, and ambassadors for a cleaner, healthier planet. 💙

Remember, it's not just about cleaning the coast; it's about leaving a lasting legacy of love and respect for the natural world. 🌍

This activity aims to encourage the Voluntary Sector and Local Government Unit (LGU) to take part in this activity and promote a cleaner and healthier coastal areas, promote environmental awareness, and contribute to the protection of our natural resources.

Pawikan Hatchery Rehabilitation Completed! 🐢🌊💙

Replacing sand in a turtle hatchery facility is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment for the developing turtle eggs and hatchlings. Here are the key reasons why sand replacement is essential:

• Hygiene and Disease Prevention: Over time, sand can accumulate bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that can be detrimental to the health of turtle eggs and hatchlings. Replacing the sand regularly helps eliminate these potential pathogens and reduces the risk of infections.

• Optimal Moisture Balance: Sand plays a vital role in regulating moisture levels within the nests. Old, compacted sand can hinder proper drainage and lead to excessive moisture buildup, which can promote mold growth and hinder proper gas exchange for the developing embryos. Replacing the sand ensures optimal moisture balance for healthy egg development.

• Temperature Regulation: Sand acts as an insulator, helping to maintain a stable temperature within the nests. However, over time, sand can become compacted and lose its insulating properties. Replacing the sand ensures that the nests maintain a consistent temperature, which is crucial for proper embryo development.

• Physical Environment: Fresh sand provides a soft, supportive substrate for turtle eggs and hatchlings. Old, compacted sand can become hard and abrasive, making it difficult for hatchlings to emerge from their nests and potentially causing injuries.

• Nutrient Replenishment: Sand can become depleted of essential nutrients over time, which can affect the growth and development of hatchlings. Replacing the sand ensures that hatchlings have access to the nutrients they need to thrive.

In addition to these, replacing sand helps to control parasites and pests that can harm turtle eggs and hatchlings. Regular sand replacement is an integral part of maintaining a healthy and successful turtle hatchery facility.

All thanks to Alpas, La Union and CURMA for giving us, Oceanus Footprints Association (OFA) and Strategic Homeland Innovators for the Enforcement of Learner Development (S.H.I.E.L.D) the opportunity to be of help in contributing to the well-being of these endangered creatures.

Sea turtles play a vital role in maintaining the health of the oceans. They are an important part of the marine food web, helping to regulate populations of jellyfish, sponges, and other organisms. They also help to maintain the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs, which are important habitats for many marine species. In addition, sea turtles transport nutrients from the ocean to beaches and coastals, which helps to support plant life and prevent erosion.

In line with this, the Oceanus Footprints Association in collaboration with CURMA, volunteers in the dig-up for the replacement of sand in the old hatchery facility at Alpas Pandan, Bacnotan in anticipation of the fast-approaching turtle season.

We give our thanks to CURMA for this memorable experience and we look forward to our continued journey of voluntary actions!
