When everything is taken from you, how do you decide which way to go?
Viktor Frankl was a brilliant psychiatrist who lost his freedom, his family, and his life's work when he was sent to a N**i concentration camp. Upon arrival, his unpublished manuscriptโthe culmination of his careerโwas confiscated and destroyed.
In a place designed to strip away every ounce of human dignity, it would have been easy to surrender to despair. Without a clear reason to live, many prisoners understandably lost the will to survive.
But Frankl refused to walk the road of hopelessness. He gave his mind a very specific destination.
He decided he was going to survive so he could rewrite his book and share his psychological framework with the world. While enduring unimaginable horrors, he mentally reconstructed his manuscript, page by page, chapter by chapter.
Because he knew exactly where he was going, he didn't let the chaos dictate his path. His clear goal gave him the resilience to survive the darkest circumstances in human history.
The lesson isn't just about surviving adversity. It's about the power of having a destination. When you lack a clear purpose, you are at the mercy of your circumstances. But when you have a definitive goal, you can navigate almost any obstacle.
What is the one goal or purpose that keeps you moving forward when the road gets difficult?
