đź’ˇ INNOVATION BITES THURSDAY: Can AI Help Us Find the Unexpected?

Food-safety testing traditionally searches for known hazards—but what about risks we do not yet know to look for?

The Singapore Food Agency has explored the use of artificial intelligence in non-targeted analysis to help identify unusual patterns and potential food-safety risks. AI can support broader surveillance and earlier investigation, while scientific expertise remains essential in verifying results.

đź’¬ What food-safety challenge in the Philippines or ASEAN could benefit most from AI-assisted analysis? Share your ideas below!

🛡️ Food Safety Tuesday: Understanding HACCP

Safe food does not happen by accident—it begins with identifying risks before they reach the consumer.

HACCP, or Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, is a preventive system that helps food businesses identify, evaluate, and control biological, chemical, and physical hazards throughout the food process.

From raw materials to final distribution, every control point matters in keeping food safe, protecting consumers, and building trust.

đź’¬ Which of the seven HACCP principles is the most challenging to implement in your workplace? Share your experience in the comments!

🥗 JULY IS NUTRITION MONTH! 🇵🇭

Good nutrition starts long before food reaches our plates—it begins on the farm, continues through safe food processing, and ends with informed food choices at home.

As we celebrate Nutrition Month, the PAFT South Luzon Chapter is launching our Nutrition Wednesday series, where we'll explore how Food Technology and Food Processing help make nutritious food safer, more accessible, and available all year round.

This month, discover how science supports nutrition—from preserving nutrients during processing to developing healthier food products using our rich agricultural resources across South Luzon.

🌋 This week's spotlight: Bicol, home to nutrient-rich crops and iconic dishes like Laing, Pinangat, and Bicol Express—proof that traditional Filipino foods can be both delicious and nutritious.

What local South Luzon ingredient are you most proud of, and how do you enjoy it? 🌿🥥🌶️🍠
Share your answer in the comments—we'd love to feature your favorites!

Together, let's celebrate the role of Food Technology in building healthier families, stronger communities, and a more food-secure Philippines.

🌱 Every PFT journey is shaped by courage, resilience, and purpose.

Today, we proudly feature Julie Amor D. Zantua, MSc., PFT, Board Director of PAFT South Luzon Chapter — an educator, mentor, and Food Technologist whose journey reminds us that even the most unexpected paths can lead to meaningful impact.

Julie first discovered Food Technology through the encouragement of her older sister, who suggested the course when she applied for UPCAT. What began as an opportunity to study at UPLB became one of the best decisions of her life.

Her journey was not without challenges. As a young student and mother, she had to balance finishing her studies while preparing to support her family. She moved through different roles in Research and Development, Quality Assurance, Quality Management, and business — gaining lessons that shaped her strength, discipline, and purpose.

Today, as an Assistant Professor III and BS Food Technology Program Chairperson at BISCAST, Julie continues to guide students, support research, and help shape future Food Technologists.

Her powerful reminder:

“The best products I help develop today are not food products — but future Food Technologists.”

To future PFTs, her message is clear: Trust your journey, keep learning, and never underestimate what you can become.

Swipe through Julie’s PFT Journey and be inspired to keep growing, keep serving, and keep creating impact. 💚

📌 Follow and connect with PAFT South Luzon Chapter as we continue sharing real stories, real passions, and real impact from our Food Technology community.
