This Pride Month, ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐ฒ honors the voices, minds, and lives of every LGBTQIA+ individual, alongside the pioneers who have helped make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics more courageous and welcoming fields. ๐ฌ๐ก We celebrate ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ป ๐ง๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด (gay), whose foundational work helped shape modern computing; ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ (le***an), the first American woman in space and a trailblazer for women in science; ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ (transgender man), a neuroscientist whose life and work challenged bias in academia; ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฟ, a public health pioneer who transformed child welfare; ๐๐๐ป๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ (transgender woman), a computer scientist whose contributions reshaped microchip design while inspiring generations through her advocacy; ๐ ๐ผ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ป (gay), a mathematician whose work spans geometry, voting rights, and civic data; and ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ด๐๐ฒ (gay), a logician whose groundbreaking work transformed formal semantics and linguistic theory. ๐งฌ๐ We also recognize the many q***r STEM figures whose names may not appear in this post, but whose brilliance, resilience, and contributions continue to expand what STEM can be.
We also celebrate the living proof of q***r ecology in nature itselfโfrom the ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ด๐ผ๐ป, whose s*x can be influenced by temperature during development, to the ๐๐๐บ๐ฏ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ๐ ๐๐พ๐๐ถ๐ฑ, known for its remarkable color-changing behavior, and the ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฎ๐น๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐, where same-s*x pairs have been observed raising chicks together. ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๏ธ In STEM and in nature, identity is never singular, never shallow, and never small. It is vast, powerful, and worthy of wonder.
May we continue to build a future where every identity is free to illuminate without fear, where curiosity is never constrained by prejudice, and where authenticity is recognized not as an exception, but as an essential part of discovery. Because science and mathematics have always advanced through diverse perspectives, every voice that dares to shine expands the horizons of what humanity can become. โจ
