๐ŸŒ•โœจ LOOK UP TONIGHT: A BLUE MOON AND A MICROMOON! โœจ๐ŸŒ•

Tonight's Full Moon is a special oneโ€”it is both a Blue Moon and a Micromoon.

Why is it called a Blue Moon?
A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon occurring within a single calendar month. Since a Full Moon occurred on May 2nd and another occurs tonight, May 31st, tonight's Full Moon earns the title of a Blue Moon.

Why can this happen?
The Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete one cycle of phases (called a lunation). Because May has 31 days, there was enough time for two Full Moons to occur in the same month.

What is a Micromoon?
Tonight's Full Moon also occurs near the Moon's apogee, or farthest point from Earth in its orbit. As a result, the Moon may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than an average Full Moon, earning it the name Micromoon.

Will the Moon appear blue?
No. Despite its name, a Blue Moon does NOT turn blue. The term simply refers to the rare occurrence of two Full Moons within one calendar month.

The rarity of Blue Moons is also the origin of the expression "once in a blue moon," which means something that happens only infrequently.

Take a moment to step outside tonight and enjoy this uncommon lunar eventโ€”a Full Moon that is both a Blue Moon and a Micromoon.
