🌎 Happy World Ocean’s Day! 🌎

Stemming from this year’s theme: "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean,” the global World Ocean Day (WOD) organization has set a multi-year action theme to guide conservation efforts.

This actionable approach centers on "Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet," pushing the implementation of the global goal to protect 30% of the world's lands, waters, and oceans by 2030 (30x30), as well as supporting the High Seas Treaty.

Furthermore, the WOD designed and strategized 12 Months of Action for 2026. For more information, you can visit WOD’s social media platforms or check out this link: https://worldoceanday.org/12-months-of-action-for-2026/

Let’s Take Action Now! ✊

🐚 Huni kang Hunas 🐚

This coming June 16, in celebration of World Sea Turtle Day, the PARC Initiative sits with the selected participants from the fisherfolk community of San Jose de Buenavista to hold space and listen.

We are gathering with our local fisherfolks for a meaningful Community Dialogue guided by three vital reflections:

"When the tides are low, what emerges on the surface?"
"When the ebb is embodied, how do we cultivate listening?"
"When the sea gives, what can we give in reciprocity?"

Let us honor the voices that guard our seas and co-create solutions for our shared marine biodiversity.

🔎 SA TUOD LANG: Truth-telling Thursday 🔍

The Rumor:
Ang mga Pawikan makaginhawa sa dalum tubig. (Sea turtles can breathe underwater.)

The Truth:
Ang mga Pawikan ay mga reptilya. Nagaginhawa sanda kang hangin pareho kanatun. (Sea turtles are reptiles. They breathe air just like us!)

While they can hold their breath for long periods (some can even stay underwater for several hours), they must come to the surface to take a breath. Imagine them swimming gracefully beneath the waves, knowing they’ll need to pop up for air!

Paagi sa paghangup kag pag-isturya kang dya nga impormasyon sa iban nga mga taho, we can raise awareness and encourage others to get involved in our conservation efforts.

Remember this truth and don’t forget to share them with your friends and family!

Ang tubig baybay nagahunas kag nagataub. 🌊

But before the waves pull back, they leave a quiet space. A moment of stillness. A chance to hear what the ocean is trying to tell us.

This coming June 16, in celebration of World Sea Turtle Day, the PARC Initiative invites the fisherfolk to a space of reflection and reciprocity. We will gather on the shores of San Jose de Buenavista to listen to the voice beneath the surface.

We will be posting more details about this gathering soon.
Participation is by invitation. To volunteer, please send us a message.

🏖️ Guidelines for Responsible Sea Turtle Release: After the Release 🏖️

Our job isn’t finished once the Pawikan hatchlings disappear into the waves. Leaving the nesting site exactly as we found it ensures the beach remains a safe, welcoming habitat for future nesting mother Pawikan. Please review these final steps to help us close out release day responsibly and leave no trace behind.

This National Fisherfolks Day, we celebrate and honor the selfless labor of our fisherfolks and coastal communities. 🌊🐟

As frontliners of food security, our fisherfolk serve equally as our primary defenders in marine conservation, safeguarding our vital blue carbon ecosystems.

Together, let us back our blue frontliners. We can start today by choosing locally caught seafood, conducting capacity-building activities, or providing them a platform to participate in policy-making.

If you have other ways to support them, let us know in the comments!

🐢 Guidelines for Responsible Sea Turtle Release: During the Release 🐢

The moment they hit the sand is crucial, and how we behave matters just as much as how we handle them. To ensure the Pawikan hatchlings make it safe to the sea, we need to minimize human interference and let their natural instincts take over. Please follow these live protocols to give these little runners the absolute best chance of surviving their first big swim.

“To walk is to map the realities of our relationality.” 👣

In the first week of November 2025, ang PARC Initiative naghiwat kang Ethnographic Walk sa baybayun kang San Jose de Buenavista. Ang dya nga aktibidades nagtugro kang dugang nga pag-intsindi kag madalum nga pakig-angut kang adbokasiya kang proyekto sa atun lokal nga komunidad.

Our participants and volunteers were confronted by the harsh reality of our coastal infrastructure. These structures meant to anchor marine protection were left abandoned and roofless, overtaken by debris. Ironically, faded murals promoting marine conservation and waste management were still visible on the crumbling concrete walls.

Why do our coastal protection facilities sit in ruins?
How can we tolerate trash piling up right near waste management signs?

These neglected structures are a wake-up call. We must look past static campaigns and demand long-term maintenance, policy enforcement, and collective responsibility to defend our vital coastlines.

What are your thoughts on this? Share your experiences or observations about our local coastlines in the comments below. Let’s start a conversation!

📋Guidelines for Responsible Sea Turtle Release: Before the Release📋

Conservation starts long before hatchlings ever touch the wet sand. Understanding the rules of engagement before the day of Pawikan Hatchling Releasing arrives is the best way to minimize stress and prevent accidental injuries to these tiny turtles. Please take a moment to review these standard protocols so we can give the pawikan hatchlings a safe start before they crawl back to the ocean.

Celebrating Ocean’s Month this May made us ponder upon Dr. Sylvia Earle’s words:

“No blue, no green.
No water, no life.”

Our oceans are the actual lungs of our planet. Marine ecosystems: like our seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and coral reefs, generate over 50% of the Earth's oxygen, far outperforming land forests. By protecting these waters, we also fuel a Blue Economy for San Jose de Buenavista. Healthy seas mean thriving fisheries and coastal communities that can prosper for generations to come.

This Ocean's Month, let us turn these thoughts into actions. By keeping our beaches clean, reducing plastic waste, and supporting the PARC Initiative, we protect the marine ecosystems that nurtures us all.

Happy Ocean's Month to all of us! 🌿🫧🦈
