Once hailed as the "Queen City of the South" for its wealthy Spanish-colonial sugar trade, Iloilo City is a masterclass in urban rebirth. Today, its storied past—marked by heritage ancestral mansions—lives in perfect harmony with progressive urban planning. As a UNEP-recognized "Role City Model," Iloilo features the multi-awarded 10-kilometer Iloilo River Esplanade, strict water treatment policies, and a booming bike lane network, proving that a city can fiercely protect its environment while driving modern progress.
To study these gold-standard practices, LINK, represented by our president Mr. Kurt Russel Marcial, with our co-founder, Mr. Celso H. Jucutan—alongside the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc. (JVOFI) technical working group, stakeholders, and partners—flew to Iloilo City last June 2–5, 2026. This benchmarking and exposure visit is a vital component of the "𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙙 𝙒𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙍𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙍𝙚𝙚𝙛 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙇𝙖 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣" project, proudly sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, Inc.
Central to the learning experience was Project AGUBAY, a data-driven, digital solid waste management initiative that has earned Iloilo global recognition for smart governance. The team participated in immersive city tours to observe grass-roots environmental programs, including localized “Tiangge sa Basura” initiatives, the Project AGUBAY headquarters, and partner junk shops that form the backbone of the city's waste diversion ecosystem.
The delegation also immersed themselves in the city’s rich cultural heritage, visiting iconic historical sites like the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles (Jaro Cathedral) and the Molo Mansion.
Beyond a standard field visit, the experience reinforced a vital truth: progressive, long-term development relies heavily on smart urban planning and environmental sustainability. True innovation doesn't compromise nature—it integrates it.
