𝐅𝐈𝐅𝐓𝐘-𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐋𝐀𝐖 | 𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟐𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 🇵🇭

History does not become less painful simply because the years have passed.

Fifty-four years ago, Martial Law subjected countless Filipinos to repression, violence, and the denial of fundamental freedoms. Families were broken. Voices were silenced. Lives were taken. And the scars left behind cannot be erased by propaganda, political convenience, or the passage of time.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡.

Today, as questions of corruption, public accountability, and political power continue to confront our institutions, we must recognize that democracy is protected by citizens who refuse to normalize abuse or surrender their voices to those in authority.

And when the time comes to choose our leaders, let this history guide our judgment.

𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬.

Leaders who welcome accountability rather than evade it. Leaders who protect dissent rather than suppress it. Leaders who uphold the Constitution rather than place themselves above it.

Do not let a familiar surname replace careful scrutiny. Do not mistake popularity for integrity. Do not allow political loyalty to silence your conscience.

Because the greatest danger to democracy is not only the concentration of power—it is a citizenry that stops questioning how that power is used.
