Empowering Women Through Coastal Livelihood: Solar Sea Salt Project
The Inner Wheel Club of San Fernando La Union (IWCSFLU) visited the Solar Sea Salt Project initiated by Empowered Woman of District 379, Jonibel Cabagbag, during the Heart Beat of Humanity Year, located in Baroro, Bacnotan, La Union.
The project involves 20 members composed of wives of fisherfolk and farmers who are actively engaged in producing Solar Sea Salt as a sustainable livelihood. This initiative is supported by Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Food Research and Training Institute (DMMMSU–FRTI), which provided technical guidance, and knowledge to help the community develop and improve their salt production.
The project is also strengthened through the support and assistance of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the Provincial Government of La Union, and the Local Government Unit of Bacnotan by providing the materials to be used in which continue to encourage and promote sustainable coastal livelihood programs for local communities.
Through the initiative of IWCSFLU, the club pledged its support by helping market and promote the locally produced sea salt. The club will also assist the group by providing essential materials such as large baskets for dried salt, long scrub brushes, caps, and sweatshirts to protect the workers from the heat of the sun while working in the salt beds.
This meaningful collaboration aims to strengthen community livelihood, enabling the beneficiaries to sell their products to pasalubong centers, local markets, and tourist resorts, while promoting locally produced sea salt from La Union.
Together, this initiative highlights the power of women empowerment, community partnership, and sustainable livelihood development.
